Chick Corea Akoustic
Band LIVE includes tracks from the Akoustic Band's song book starting
with the 1980s and moving forward, as well as the band pays tribute to some of
the greats in the jazz world such as Thelonious Monk, Chet
Baker, and Duke Ellington. This is the Akoustic Band's first release
in over two decades, but the sound feels like it was just a few minutes break
between sets. This is the last LIVE session by the legendary Chick Corea which
says it all, this a must have release.

Chick
Corea Akoustic Band LIVE with John Patitucci & Dave Weckl was released on the Concord
Jazz label
and was recorded January 13, 2018 at the SPC Music Hall in St. Petersburg,
Florida. This marks the first release by the Akoustic Band in over two decades
and is a masterpiece of musicianship with over two hours of scintillating
music.
Disc 1 opens with the
Chick Corea original Morning Sprite from the Akoustic Band songbook circa 1989.
The track is a slow burn jazz track with playful interaction between the trio
with timely transitions. The Chick Corea original A Japanese Waltz, circa 1984, follows and
is a graceful and smart track with beautiful piano interludes that gathers in
the other musicians across the melody. The Band turns their music chops to the
Chet Baker track That Old Feeling (1956), and their instruments flow across the
track as they share the lead and follow each other seamlessly; Chet would be
tapping his feet to their rendition.
The release changes pace
with the poignant and elegant cover of the Duke Ellington classic In a
Sentimental Mood. The track Rhumba Flamenco is a 14-minute masterpiece of timing, synchronization,
and punch as each member opens-up and lets their instrument sweep the listener
away. Disc 1 closes out with the tracks Summer Night, written by Al Dubin and
Harry Warren, an up tempo and rich waltz, and the song Humpty
Dumpty, which
was originally recorded by Chick Corea in 1978.
Disc
2 opens with the vibrant track On Green Dolphin Street, and the Band does
not slow down as they run through this regal and twisting tempo. Next up is Eternal
Child, originally recorded by the Band in 1988, which leads in on the
fingers of John Patiucci's bass creating a haunting entry to this ballad. The
track You and the Night and the Music takes the sound to a slow smolder
as Dave Weckl's drums pace the sound and sets up the "rhythm section."
Chick
Corea and the Band show their love and admiration of Thelonious Monk as they
tackle his song Monk's Mood where they lay their own signature to rich instrumental
harmonies. The last track on Disc 2 is You're Everything and the Band
puts a unique spin on the tract to complement a special guest appearance by
Chick Corea's wife and vocalist Gayle Moran Corea.
