MTC - The Legend of Georgia Mcbride - Norwalk, CT

The Legend of Georgia McBride at the Music Theatre of Connecticut (MTC) in Norwalk, Connecticut is proof that life does not always follow our carefully designed plans. When Casey, an Elvis impersonator at a down-and-out bar in Florida, played with great aplomb by Clint Hromsco, finds himself soon to be out of a job with a wife and a baby on the way, he is forced to make a career decision when the bar becomes a drag show club. The result is downright hilarious at times as Miss Tracie Mills, played to perfection by Russell Saylor, coaches Casey into his new role as a drag queen, yet the play goes deeper than the surface and provides glimpses into the multi-layered lives of the people behind the drag. Directed by Kevin Connors, rounding out the impressive cast are Diva Lamarr as Rexy/Jason, Teagan La’Shay as Jo, and Scott Mikita as Eddie, the club owner.

While enthusiastic about his Elvis impersonation and his new jumpsuit, unfortunately Casey’s Elvis routine is not bringing in enough customers and Eddie played by Scott Mikita must face the fact that he needs to close the bar. When Eddie’s flamboyant cousin, Miss Tracie Mills, drag queen extraordinaire breezes into town with fellow drag queen Rexy in tow, the two convince him to turn his down at the heels bar into a drag club. While doubtful of its success, for Eddie, as well as for Miss Tracie Wells and Rexy, turning the bar into a drag club is a final attempt by all to survive, as they have run out of options. Surprisingly, the club catches on, and Casey is enlisted to work as a bartender.

Just as the club is beginning to catch on and is starting to attract customers, Rexy goes off on a bender, and cannot perform. As Miss Tracie cannot perform all night by herself, she coerces Casey to perform in drag on stage, and the results are hilarious as he takes to the stage impersonating the French singer, Edith Piaf.

Night after night, Casey keeps on performing, perfecting his act, attracting customers, and is finally earning enough money to pay the rent each month and things seem to be going well for him when his wife Jo comes to the club and catches him in his drag act. Very different from his Elvis impersonator act or his work as a bartender, his wife has a tough time accepting his new career and the fact that he kept it a secret from her. When she realizes that he does indeed love her, and is good at his new career, she comes around and gives him her support to succeed.

Playwright Matthew Lopez works his magic by not only bringing hilarity and gaiety to the play but also by showing the depth and multi-layers of the characters of Miss Tracie Mills and Rexy that are oftentimes heartbreaking. To quote the Rolling Stones, while “you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you’ll find you get what you need,” which is exactly what the plot of The Legend of Georgia McBride is all about.
