After taking a morning Thimble Island Cruise aboard the Sea Mist, we had worked up a thirst and decided to remedy that by making a visit to Stony Creek Brewery located in Branford, Connecticut. A craft brewery, their specialties include Crankys, New England India Pale Ales, Ales, Lagers, Stouts, and more to appeal to diverse styles and palate preferences. In addition to their diverse selection of beers they also have an exciting music scene with live music making it a very interesting place to visit. Cheers!

Connecticut has a vibrant craft beer following, and to appreciate the essence of what they are creating at Stony Creek Brewery, we made a visit and did a flight tasting where we sampled four different draft beers selected from their Something Light, Something Hazy, Something Sour and Something Dark categories.

Beginning with a little something from their Something Light category, we sampled Dock Time, which was a delicious Amber Lager with 4.8% alcohol, made with a blend of Columbus and Saaz hops. Interesting to note about the hops is that Columbus hops are heavily hoppy with citrus notes, while Saaz hops are one of the four original noble hops and is used to create that distinctive aroma for pilsners and Bohemian lagers.

Next in the tasting, there was Boat Shoes from the Something Hazy category, which had 5.6% alcohol, and a pale lemon color. Described as a Hazy Pale Ale made from a blend of Citra and Sabro hops, it was hazy, juicy, and awesome liquid, which lived up to its name, with notes of citrus peel and coconut. Interesting to note about the hops used to create Boat Shoes is that Citra hops add citrus aromas while Sabro hops add complexity and fruit and citrus notes.

We continued with a selection from their Something Sour section, and sampled their Basic Batch, a Sour Ale with 5.0% alcohol, described as having marshmallow, mango, and tangerine notes. With its yellow orange color, it was juicy and a great summer beverage.

Moving on to the Something Dark category, we experienced their Kicker, a Barley Wine, with 16.3% alcohol! To give you an idea of the power of this very tasty but immensely powerful ale is that higher alcohol wines usually top out at 14.5% alcohol. Kicker was aptly named and indeed a “kicker,” a gorgeous, dark ale for fans of slightly bitter dark chocolate. This would be a great brew to pair with food as well as use in culinary recipes. Our thoughts would be to pair Kicker with hearty meat dishes, barbecue, and even chocolate cake and chocolate desserts. As fans of dark beers and stouts, of course we loved it, and while it would be fabulous to enjoy in colder weather, on a warm summer day, our tastes leaned towards Basic Batch, the Sour Ale to better quench our thirsts.

In addition to the beers listed on their menu and available on draft or to go, they also produce limited editions, special releases for the holidays, and seasonal favorites, which gives us another reason to stop by and sample another flight the next time we are up in Branford, Connecticut and see what they have been busying creating.

Until next time, cheers!
