Cold and rainy weather will soon be here making it the perfect time to stay inside and play family board games. I grew up playing epic, marathon games of Monopoly with my sister Joanne and brother David. As young children we spent many countless happy hours playing this game of skill, luck, and strategy, which was permanently installed on the games table in the family room of our home. When I learned that Top Trumps USA Inc. was introducing a new Monopoly Greenwich (Connecticut) edition, it brought a smile to face and my heart raced with anticipation of playing their new game. For the Greenwich edition, Monopoly has replaced the famous properties of my youth with Greenwich landmarks.
Growing up playing the game of Monopoly, we learned to carefully plot and plan each real estate purchase like real estate veterans. Seasoned players that we became, we learned the value of purchasing railroads and the high-ticket real estate properties i.e. Boardwalk, Park Place, and Pennsylvania Avenue. We knew that buying up anything and everything and putting houses on them without a keen eye to the future could result in losing our money and costing us the game. Over the course of many years, we learned to become shrewd buyers, we learned the value of money, and when we landed on the Community Chest space, we learned the value of charitable giving. It also provided us with countless hours of fun!
Featured on the new board are Greenwich Library and Greenwich Hospital, the railroad companies are represented by Old Greenwich Station, Greenwich Station, Cos Cob Station, and Riverside Station, which are the Metro North Railroad stations serving the various sections of Greenwich. Historical and cultural landmarks include the Bush Holley House, Putnam Cottage, Bruce Museum, and the Audubon Center.
Greenwich has beautiful outdoor spaces, represented by Byram Park, Bruce Park, Roger Sherman Park, Binney Park, Greenwich Harbor, and beaches: Island Beach, Great Captain Island, and Greenwich Point. The Greenwich calendar is filled with fun annual events including the Film Festival (Greenwich International Film Festival "GIFF"), the Town Party, and the Car Show (Greenwich Concours d ‘Elegance).
Greenwich, Connecticut is a wealthy enclave and thus Miller Motorcars (think luxury motorcars i.e. Ferrari, Aston Martin, Bentley, and more) is prominently listed as is Greenwich Avenue lined with prestigious and luxurious shops and upscale restaurants with top chefs. Other notables include the Country Club and Greenwich Creatives.
As with the original game, there are the utility companies, represented by Greenwich Water and Greenwich Electricity. You must still pay a Super Tax, you can Go to Jail, have Free Parking, and Collect a Salary as you pass GO, if you land on those spaces, and there are still many opportunities to land on Chance and the Community Chest spaces.
