Café Allegre is a delightful, warm, and welcoming Italian restaurant located in downtown Madison, Connecticut. Proudly celebrating over 25 years in business, Café Allegre was founded by Chef Silvio Suppa. His son, Chef Ilario Suppa, continues the family’s culinary legacy as the talent in the kitchen. We had an excellent dinner at Café Allegre on a Friday night when the restaurant hummed with activity with locals, including one of Madison’s own, Chef Jacques Pepin, and visiting guests as well.

Café Allegre

A mainstay at 725 Boston Post Road in Madison, Café Allegre has outdoor dining amidst its storied pillars on its front porch, as well as inside in one of its many dining rooms. The menu is divided into Antipasti-Appetizers, Zuppe-Soup, Insalate-Salad, Farinacci-Pasta, Secondi Piatti-Main Course, and Contorni-Side Orders, with enough selections to appeal to diverse palates. This family-friendly restaurant also has a section called Qualcosa Per Bambini ("Something for Children"), so families can dine with confidence that there will be something appealing for their little ones.

We had an excellent dinner at the Café Allegre on Friday, July 14, 2023, and began our evening with glasses of Maschio Prosecco as we perused the menu. We continued with two of their antipasti, the Artichoke Hearts Milanese, and the Pane Cotto. The artichoke hearts were breaded and fried and then drizzled with garlic butter, and dusted with parmigiano cheese, and were meaty and delicious. The Pane Cotto was a mélange of escarole, cannellini beans, and friselle (Italian bread), drizzled with olive oil and baked with cheese in a casserole dish until golden brown. Served with crispy Italian bread and a bottle of olive oil, it was a great introduction to Chef Ilario Suppa and the restaurant’s style.

We continued with an entrée of Eggplant Parmigiano from the Farinacei-Pasta section of the menu. This was traditional Italian cuisine, always one of our favorites, and the eggplant was breaded, fried, and then baked in a rich "Sunday sauce" and served piping hot under melted mozzarella cheese. Paired with a glass of Ruffino Chianti Superiore from Italy, it was a hearty meal.

The Secondi Piatti – Main Course section of the menu featured several appealing dishes of chicken, veal, beef, and pork, along with a variety of seafood dishes, however it was the Chateau of Beef Bordelaise that caught our attention. Beautifully presented, the generous portion of Angus beef tenderloin was thinly sliced, grilled, fork tender, and served in a rich and flavorful Bordelaise sauce. Paired with smashed red skinned potatoes, green beans, broccoli, yellow and red peppers, and carrots, it was a substantial meal and the epitome of great comfort food. We paired the Chateau of Beef Bordelaise with a glass of Niento Sentiner, Camila Malbec, from Mendoza, Argentina to complement the flavors of the beef.

Although the Café Allegre dessert menu looked inviting, after the antipasti and our main courses, we were more than satisfied and decided to pass on having a dessert. When we left the restaurant, the bar was still going strong with Madison, Connecticut celebrating the beginning of the weekend.
