As cocktailians (those interested in the art of creating and enjoying cocktails), during our visit to the gorgeous island of Curaçao, we took a very educational and tasty guided tour at Landhuis Chobolobo distillery with Gen, to learn the inside scoop on what makes their Genuine Curaçao Liqueur so special, and world famous. What would Tiki and tropical cocktails be without Genuine Curaçao Liqueur Triple Sec? It was a very delicious experience. Cheers!

Always interested in the production of spirits, on Monday, March 30, 2026, we took a highly informative guided distillery tour at Landhuis Chobolobo with Gen Riley to learn more about the spirit named for the island of Curaçao. It is interesting to note that Senior & Co. has used the same recipe for the past 130 years to create their intriguing product made from sun-dried Laraha peels from the Golden Orange of Curaçao (citrus aurantium curassuviensis).

Laraha Tree
It is interesting to note that the Laraha orange is very bitter with a richly aromatic skin. To create their Genuine Curaçao Triple Sec Liqueur, they hand cut the oranges off the trees, peel the oranges, and place the peels in the sun to dry for 4 days. After the drying period, the peels are cooked with cardamom, sugar, cloves, and ethyl alcohol derived from natural cane sugar imported from Holland, then bottled in their distinctive round glass textured bottles with flat fronts and backs that are handmade in Spain and bear their tree logo embossed on the front, and their corks are made in Portugal.

Genuine Curacao Liqueurs
While Blue Curaçao is the most recognized color, Senior & Co. makes their delectable The Genuine Curaçao Liqueur Triple Sec in a rainbow of colors that represent the colors of the island including blue, red, orange, green, and also clear, which have 31% alcohol by volume, and their special Senior’s Genuine Curaçao Liqueur, also made with Laraha peels, is clear in color and has an alcohol by volume of 40%. Although made since 1896, colors were introduced in the 1950s and 60s.

Curaçao Flavored Liqueurs
In addition to their Genuine Curaçao Liqueur Triple Sec, they also created four very tasty liqueurs (made without the famous Laraha orange peels) in the 1940s: Tamarind (Tamarèin), Rum Raisin (Rasenchi), Coffee (Kafe Korsou), and Chocolate (Chukulati) Having sampled all of them, they are absolutely delicious and provide volumes of cocktail inspiration, all at 25% alcohol by volume.

Gen Riley discusses adding Cardamom, Sugar, Laraha Peels, & Cloves
Also interesting to note about Senior & Co. is that they are a Kosher company and fly in Rabbi Tzoi Rosen from New York to maintain their Star K Kosher certification and ensure that it meets Kashrus Jewish Dietary non-chometz grain source, ethyl alcohol, and Kosher certification of its raw materials.

Curaçao Liqueur original and still the main Still
While the company is small in stature, there are less than 40 people in the company, they are big in heart and spirit and produce 178,000 bottles of spirits each year. There are only 8 people that work in production and that includes working on the bottling line to manually top off the bottles to the bottom of the embossed tree logo on the bottles once the bottling machine has processed the initial fill. The bottles are then corked, handwashed, and labels are applied by hand.

See you on the next tour!
In addition to making their Genuine Curaçao Triple Sec and Liqueurs, since 1948, they also make Alcolado Glacial, a cooling lotion made with lime oil, menthol, and alcohol, which is good for treating many external ills including its use to refresh, relieve a headache, applied to the skin to energize throughout the day, relieve mosquito bites, and much more.

After the distillery tour, we tasted their Genuine Curaçao Triple Sec and various liqueurs, followed by enjoying a refreshing cocktail. While all of the cocktails on the menu looked intriguing, we opted for their Passionfruit Cocktail made from passionfruit juice, elderflower, amber rum, and Senior & Co. Genuine Curaçao Liqueur (40% alcohol by volume) in their attractive colonial garden. It was the perfect way to end our discovery of Curaçao’s true island gem.
