While Chick Corea’s latest release, Chick Corea Plays hits the streets on September 11, 2020, the music he plays was created by composers born from 1685 through 1950. It is a "who’s who" of piano greats through the ages with music composed by Italian composer (Domenico) Scarlatti (October 26, 1685 – July 23, 1757), Austrian composer (Wolfgang Amadeus) Mozart (January 27, 1756 – December 5, 1791), Polish composer (Frédéric) Chopin (March 1, 1810 – 1849), Russian composer (Alexander) Scriabin (December 25, 1871 – April 14, 1915), American composer (George) Gershwin (September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937), American composer (Thelonious Sphere) Monk (October 10, 1917 – February 17, 1982), Brazilian composer (Antonio Carlos "Tom") Jobim (January 25, 1927 – December 8, 1994), American composer (William "Bill" John) Evans (August 16, 1929 – September 15, 1980, and American composer (Stevie) Wonder (DOB May 13, 1950).
I have had the pleasure of experiencing many of Chick Corea’s live performances throughout the years, as well as listening to and reviewing many of his own albums and other albums he has played on. The man is not only a piano master, he knows how to engage the audience and keep them enthralled. If there is one constant with Chick Corea, it is that he is constantly evolving, and the results are always impressive.
Chick Corea
American composer and pianist Armando Antonio "Chick" Corea grew up in a large close-knit musical family, (he is one of 13 children), and he and his family would spend time at his grandfather’s house taking turns playing the piano. One of the family’s favorite things to do was to compose musical "caricatures or sketches" of each other. The new album was recorded from various concerts, and during one of his concert performances, he asked a few audience members if they would like to come up on stage and he would compose an improv musical sketch for them. Imagine the excitement for the lucky few recipients to have Chick Corea create music especially for them. Talk about a memorable evening of music!
Also interesting on the release is when Chick invites a few pianists in the audience to come up and play an improv duet with him. Chick Corea Plays, whether playing solo or with audience friends, is absolutely magic!
Rounding out the 2-disc release are 8 of his "Children’s Songs (1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 15, 17, 12). Chick Corea is always engaging, however he is even more so on Chick Corea Plays where he talks with the audience about the music, the composers, and his life. It is an intimate look at an incredibly talented composer and pianist. Bravo!
