The Taming of The Shrew - Lake Tahoe - Jessika Williams, Jonathan Dyrud The Taming of The Shrew, part of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, performed at the Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park in Incline Village, Nevada was a gorgeous production with the stunning lake as its backdrop. A perfect Summer evening in a wonderful venue watching The Taming of The Shrew one of Shakespeare’s most renowned and uproarious comedic plays was a highlight of our trip. The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival runs until August 25, 2019.

It may have been 403 years since the death of the great British Bard, William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616), however his plays continue to be performed with much acclaim, especially during the Summer festivals held in his honor. The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is held annual during the months of July and August in Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park in Incline Village, approximately a just under a 1-hour drive from Reno. We had the good fortune of seeing his play, The Taming of The Shrew on Friday, July 26, 2019.

The premise of the play is that the wealthy Baptista Minola has two daughters of marriageable age, Bianca the younger, sweet and pretty daughter, and an older daughter, Katherine, a free spirted, beautiful but hard to handle, short of temper, ball of fire. As etiquette and social mores of the day dictate, Katherine must marry before her younger sister Bianca can marry, however who in their right mind will want to marry Katherine, and if such a suitor can be found for her, how can her father hope to persuade her to accept the proposal. With that dilemma in mind, the fun begins as well as the hilarious series of suitors for both of his daughters ensues. Katherine meets her match with the fortune-hunting Petruchio who is determined to have Katherine, and her fortune, and tame her for his own. It was an evening of gaiety and laughter, istaken identity, and of course, witty dialogue that was the perfect foil to a perfect Summer night.

Sara Bruner expertly directed the exceptional cast of Jessika D. Williams as the feisty Katherine,J onathan Dyrud as Petruchio her suitor, Steve Pickering as Baptista Minola, father of Katherine and Bianca, and Mandie Jenson as Bianca, to name but a few of the talented cast. From beginning to end the play was a resounding success. Sumptuous costumes designed by Leah Piehl, and a beautiful set designed by Russell Metheny helped to transform the stage at Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park in Incline Village, Nevada and transport the audience to "Merry Olde England."

After the cast received a standing ovation for their performance, the stage went dark and suddenly the velvety black night sky was dotted with billions of twinkling stars as if to continue the magic that happens whenever actors and audiences meet. Bravo!
