Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, Nevada, USA PDF Print E-mail
Written by Debra C. Argen and Edward F. Nesta
Nevada Museum of Art - Garden of Eden - Reno, NevadaReno, Nevada has an abundance of art and culture at is fingertips, which we experienced at the Nevada Museum of Art located in downtown Reno in the Liberty district, where our art experience began by admiring the inspired contemporary design of the Nevada Museum of Art designed by internationally renowned American architect Will Bruder, and the sculptures located in its exterior courtyard.

When we arrived at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, we saw a large poster advertising the Nevada Art Museum and their Georgia O'Keefe exhibition, which runs until October 20, 2019, and knew that we wanted to make time during our stay in Reno to visit the museum.

Our visit to the museum was well spent as we took time to see their extensive special exhibition on the American artist Georgia O'Keefe (1887 - 1986), nicknamed the "Mother of Modernism" entitled "Georgia O'Keefe, Living Modern." The exhibition focuses not only on Georgia O'Keefe the artist, with many of her paintings on display including her distinctive New Mexico landscapes and large-scale florals, it also focuses on Georgia O'Keefe the clothing designer, and has many of her creations that capture the essence of the free-spirted Ms. O'Keefe. In addition to spending time painting, Ms. O'Keefe was an avid camper, communing with nature, and the exhibition also includes her camping gear.

The exhibition also focuses on Georgia O'Keefe as the subject of her many photographer friends including Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, and Todd Webb, whose black and white photographs help give substance to Georgia O'Keefe's life as a person, as well as an artist.

We also saw the wonderful exhibitionon the artist Jack Malotte, entitled, "The Art of Jack Malotte," which runs until October 20, 2019. Mr. Malotte, who is Western Shoshone and Washoe, "makes artworks that celebrate the landscapes of the Great Basin, with a unique focus on contemporary political issues faced by Native people seeking to protect and preserve access to their lands. Malotte infuses wry humor into his work, even as he delves into subject matter that is sometimes serious and sobering. Malotte's most recent work reconsiders historical narratives and myths of the American West, refers to Western Shoshone and Washoe traditions and legends, and highlights longtime political, environmental, and legal struggles of Native communities."

Other long-term exhibitions include Zhi Lin: Chinese Railroad Workers of the Sierra Nevada, which runs until November 10, 2019, Maya Lin: Pin River-Tahoe Watershed, which runs until December 31, 2019, Andrea Zittel: Wallsprawl, and Ugo Rondinone: Seven Magic Mountains, both of which run until December 21, 2021, and many more.

The Nevada Museum of Art has so much to see so do allow a few hours to fully experience the museum, its gift shop, and their French-inspired restaurant, Chez Louie. There are docent-hosted tours as well as special events, so please visit the website: www.nevadaart.org for a full listing of current and upcoming exhibitions.

About the Museum

"Founded in 1931, the Nevada Museum of Art (the Museum) is the only art museum in Nevada accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). Co-founded in 1931 by Dr. James Church, an early climate scientist, humanist, and lover of art, the Museum in its early days was run by a small group of outdoor landscape painters. As a result, the Museum has long understood the importance of examining how humans interact with their natural, built, and virtual surroundings. Designed by internationally renowned architect Will Bruder, the present Museum facility opened in 2003 at the heart of Reno's downtown Liberty district. The four-level, 70,000-square-foot building is inspired by geological formations in northern Nevada's Black Rock Desert and serves as a visual metaphor for the institution's scholarly focus on art and environment."

"The institution's identity continues to be shaped by the geographic location and environment. The Museum's proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and the surrounding Great Basin Desert region places it at the nexus of both awe-inspiring scenery and a rapidly changing landscape. It is an ideal place for dynamic conversations about the ways that humans creatively interact with environments. This idea is reflected in the Museum's permanent collection, which is divided into four thematic focus areas: the Robert S. and Dorothy J.Keyser Art of the Greater West Collection, the Carol Franc Buck Altered Landscape Photography Collection, the Contemporary Art Collection, and the E.L. Wiegand Work Ethic in American Art Collection."

The museum is open Wednesday from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm, Thursday from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm, Friday through Sunday from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. The museum is closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and National Holidays.

Admission: General Admission: $10, Students/Seniors (ages 60 and up) $8, Children (6 - 12 years) $1, Children (5 and under) free, High School students (with valid school I.D.) free. There is free onsite parking.
