Flower Power at the New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY, USA

The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) in Bronx, New York takes visitors back to the 1960s and 70s with their latest spectacular exhibition, Flower Power. The Woodstock era and art and posters by the artists Warhol, Peter Max, Lee Conklin, Victor Moscoro, Bonnie MacLean, and others lend an authenticity to the exhibition that begins with the NYBG’s brightly colored Flower Power bus painted by New York artist Snoeman in front of the fountain by the Mertz Library Art Galleries, and continues with installations in and on the lawn of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, as well as throughout the gardens. Take a step back in time this summer and let your inner hippie shine. Tie-died shirts and flowers in your hair are optional. Flower Power runs until October 18, 2026.

We attended a preview of Flower Power on Tuesday, May 20, 2026, and it was sensational. We began our “journey back in time” in front of the 1901 Beaux-Arts landmark, the Mertz Library Art Galleries where a colorful painted bus, by Snoeman, and period music created the perfect vibe.

After a welcome by NYBG CEO Jennifer Bernstein, we went Inside the Library, where there were posters, paintings, videos, along with fashions from the 1960s and 1970s, including flower print bell bottom pants paired with a long suede fringed vest, a mini-dress, and a Nehru jacket.

In the reflecting pool near the historic clock and the gift shop, a giant peace sign greeted visitors and continued the 1960s and 1970s theme and vibe, along with colorfully painted buses, and bright banners led the way to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory where more surprises awaited.

On the lawn of the Conservatory, there was an enormous hand-painted acrylic on textile installation, Velora, 2026. “Led by artist William Hochweber, Mushuman created hand painted textiles that echo the patterns and colors of nature.” Bright and fanciful, the installation was a kaleidoscope of colors with colorful benches placed under it for visitors to take time to enjoy the beauty of the installation as well as take time to reflect on the surrounding beauty of the gardens resplendent with their blooms.

Inside the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the artist Amie Jacobsen has once again created sculptural magic with Flower Shower, 2026, fanciful flowers created from aluminum, acrylic, and painted steel rising from the pool inside the conservatory.

A plaque beside the work notes, “As hundreds of thousands of people descended on Bethel, New York, for the 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival (August 15-19, 1969), a legendary traffic jam ensued. Many attendees abandoned their cars to the road, walking miles to the festival site. In order to get supplies in and performers to the stage, the organizers had to bring in helicopters. After the rainstorm on Saturday, August 16th, the helicopters dropped daisies on the crowd during a supply drop, to lift damp spirits. Jacobsen’s Flower Shower pays homage to this moment.”

We had seen Amie Jacobsen’s work previously during the NYBG’s Van Gogh Flowers last May 2025, and were enchanted to see more of her work, including a stunning Daisy Lamp, 2026, created using wood, steel, aluminum, acrylic, and LED, surrounded by a profusion of flowers. Amie’s note about Daisy Lamp, “It’s such a simple idea that flowers are for everyone. But, it’s true there’s a simple beauty in the natural world that is there for everyone, if we just pause long enough to see it.”

Speaking with Amie during the 2026 exhibition, she told us that while her sculptures are interesting during the day, in the evening, lights come on and create a different vibe. In addition to the day programs, NYBG also has special evening programs, so we will want to return to experience the full spectrum of day and evening events.

Although very warm, It was such a gorgeous day with Spring flowers in full bloom that we took a leisurely stroll through the many gardens, followed by a ride on the tram, which is the best way to experience the 250-acre NYBG.

Afterwards, always children at heart, we visited the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden and the “Summer of Moomin” where children can explore, learn interesting facts, play a colorful xylophone, look for the Moomins, paint with water on slate, and much more. Such fun!

We spent 3 hours at the NYBG, and you can easily spend that or an entire day, as there is much to experience, so do allow yourself amble time for your visit. There are different dining options as well as a gift shop to make your visit even more enjoyable.
