Greenwich, Connecticut has a sensational art space and store, Greenwich Art + Design located on East Putnum Avenue. Owned by renowned muralist and decorative painter Suzanne Bellehumeur, the two-floor gallery and luxury shop opened in September to enormous success. The shop is gorgeous with Suzanne’s murals gracing the walls, with interesting gifts, jewelry, clothing, and art available. On Saturday, November 16, 2025, we attended the reception, BACKBEAT – The Lost Photography of Michael Friedman, direct from The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, in association with Greenwich Art + Design, and beautifully curated by P.J. Griffith. The photographs captured the 1960s and early 70s, with evocative photographs of Rock legends, Janis Joplin, Levon Helm, Todd Rundgren, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, and so many others. It was a night of great art and lively discussions with Michael Friedman, Suzanne, P.J. Griffith, and invited guests.

Suzanne Bellehumeur and Debra C. Argen
The late 1960s and early 70s was a time of great music and legendary musicians that made their mark on the music world – Janis Joplin (1943-1970), Levon Helm (1940-2012) and The Band, Todd Rundgren, Kris Kristofferson (1936-2024), Rita Coolidge, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner (1939-2023), Johnny Winter (1944-2014), Keith Richards, and others, and Michael Friedman had the fortuitous position of having a camera in hand and being in the right place at the right time to capture those lost moments in time. As an assistant to music manager, Albert Grossman, and then later as a manager and music producer himself, offered him the rare opportunity to get up close to many music legends, for which the art, and rock world, are thankful.

Michael Friedman
The invitation invited guests to dress in Rock ‘n’ Roll chic, which added another element to the reception, as invited guests strolled around the gallery appreciating Michael’s black and white photographs. It is interesting to note that many of these remarkable photographs were never printed, until Michael’s wife, Donna, happened upon them in the attic of their Connecticut home. The photographs in the exhibit were part of a year-long solo exhibition at The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, and also included in Michael and Donna’s book, “EXPOSED: The Lost Negatives and Untold Stories of Michael Friedman.”

While these incredible photographs each tell their own stories, meeting Michael Friedman and discussing the backstory of some of the photographs gracing the walls of Greenwich Art + Design was the perfect complement to a fabulous night of art, music, and making new friends. If you love the Rock ‘n’ Roll scene from the late 1960s and early 1970s, do visit Greenwich Art + Design to personally experience the evocative images captured on film by Michael Friedman.
