Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art
We visited Hudson Valley MOCA on a rainy, Saturday morning on September 23, 2023, which was a perfect way to spend time indoors appreciating art. We took a very informative tour with artist Jo-Ann Brody who explained the Exhibition “How We Live, Sculpture and Video from The Marc and Livia Straus Family Collection.“
“Royal Babariga”
by Ozioma Onuzulike
The exhibition was an interesting mélange of art by 37 artists from 21 countries. One of the many impressive highlights of our visit included the large-scale work entitled “Royal Babariga, 2002” measuring 124 x 120 x 8 inches and made with 15,875 ceramic palm kernel shell beads, stoneware clay bodies, recycled glasses, and copper wire, by Nigerian ceramic artist Ozioma Onuzulike (1972). This stunning work was not only impressive by its sheer-size, color, and structure, but also by the fact that Ozioma had handcrafted each of the beads used.
“The Chief Justice”
by Moffat Takadiwa
Also interesting was a work entitled, “The Chief Justice (3), 2018” created by Zimbabwean artist Moffat Takadiwa (1983) using computer keys to create his wall sculpture measuring 98.5 x 39.4 x 7.9 inches, that had great movement and color. Our only regret was that we did not have more time to spend at the Museum and explore this work at length to discover if Moffat had created any messages with his placement of the computer keys.
“The Design of Pursuit”
by Chris Jones
British artist Chris Jones (1975) also captured our imaginations with his engaging and deft and creative use of paper, magazine, book images, and board to create an impressive body of work including his standing motorcycle entitled “The Design of Pursuit, 2014” and wall art entitled “Seasons Don’t Fear the Tear, 2007.“
“To hear a pin drop you must be silent”
by Patricia Miranda
Another imaginative and massive work was by New York artist Patricia Miranda, entitled “To hear a pin drop you must be silent, 2022” made from donated and found repurposed vintage textiles, cotton thread, muslin pins, and steel ring. Looking at this large-scale work was like taking a step back in time with her creative placement of aprons some of which had embroidery or applique designs, crocheted doilies, and embroidered and lace tea linens, dresser scarves, ladies’ hankies with delicate crocheted lace edges, embroidered cocktail napkins, and much more. Our interpretation is that it is a statement about the artwork that went into the creation of the everyday items that went beyond mere functionality. What a lovely reminder and creative use of the past to create art in the present.
“Seasons Don’t Fear the Tear”
by Chris Jones
There are many wonderful pieces in the Exhibition, and the art that we have chosen to highlight is only a small representation of the full-scale collection, which must be seen to be fully appreciated beginning with the robot placed at the entrance.
Until next time, keep enjoying and supporting the arts!
