Steely Dan was founded in 1972 by Walter Becker (1950 – 2017) and Donald Fagen, and for the past 50 years, the band has charmed their fans with their distinct sound, a harmonious blend of jazz, rock, blues, and soul. We attended the second night of their 3-night engagement at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, where they were booked August 10, 12, and 13. Their Earth after hours Northeast tour began in May 2022 and was coming to a close and the Friday night fans filled the historic theatre for the opportunity for one more time to celebrate the music of this iconic band.

The Dave Stryker Trio comprised of Dave Stryker on guitar, Jared Gold on organ, and McClenty Hunter on drums opened the concert and paved the way for an evening of excellence. This dynamic jazz band lead off the evening with a Dave Stryker tune entitled, Blues Strut, which got the party started so to speak. The band followed that up with a song from The Temptations, followed by another Dave Stryker song entitled, Prime, off his new album, and closed out with a fabulous Curtis Mayfield cover.

The Capitol Theatre was built in 1926, and although it has been renovated, it still maintains much of its original charm and character and is a gracious host with its great acoustics and large stage that easily held the Steely Dan band which has 13 members, (2 saxophonists, 1 trumpeter, and 1 slide trombonist, 3 guitarists, 2 keyboardists, 1 drummer, and 3 back-up singers).

Fronted by founder Donald Fagen on vocals, melodica and keyboards, the Steely Dan band took the stage and the fans went wild with applause as they kicked off the evening into high gear by playing their 1976 studio album, The Royal Scam, in its entirety beginning with Kid Charlemagne, and then segueing into The Caves of Altamira, Don’t Take Me Alive, Sign In Stranger, The Fez, Green Earrings, Haitian Divorce, Everything You Did, and ending with the title song, The Royal Scam. This was a real treat for the audience to have the experience of listening to the entire album played live from start to finish, in the order that they appear on the album.

Next on the setlist was the song, Hey Nineteen, a cut from their 1980 album, Gaucho, followed by Aja, the title song from the album by the same name released in 1977. The band continued with Green Flower Street followed by Pretzel Logic, the title song off their 1974 album.

The band segued into Peg, another cut off the 1977 Aja album, and by now the audience was signing along, and continued to do so as the band followed up with My Old School off the band’s 1973 album, Countdown to Ecstasy. They closed the concert out with Reelin’ In The Years off their 1972 album, which was aptly fitting as the audience was indeed reelin’ in the years after a sensational night of Steely Dan music. After a resounding standing ovation, the band returned to the stage for an encore to leave the fans with one more great song. A Man Ain’t Supposed To Cry, before they ventured out into the night with the refrains of the music echoing in their heads.
Until next time, keep enjoying the music and supporting the arts!
