Emerson Resort & Spa – Mt. Tremper, NY
We stayed at the hotel in late August 2018 and were warmly welcomed by the staff and the quote by the American poet and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882), "Adopt the Pace of Nature" written on the wall behind the reception area. The Emerson Resort & Spa’s name is a nod to Ralph Waldo Emerson and there are many of his wonderful quotes throughout the resort.
Emerson Resort & Spa – beautiful gardens
We were impressed with the front grounds of the Emerson Resort & Spa, which were beautifully maintained with an attractive koi pond and water feature, a picturesque wooden bridge, and pretty gardens that were a sensational display of color, with chairs and benches strategically placed for guests’ quite enjoyment. In the back grounds of the resort there were more gardens and benches, a large pond lined with cat-o-nine tails, and Adirondack chairs setalong the bank of the Esopus Creek where we enjoyed sitting and watching the fly fishermen.
Exquisite Grounds
For a boutique resort with only 53-rooms, of which 26 are suites and rooms in the main building, and 27 are suites and rooms in the lodge building, the resort has a very spacious feel and has many indoor public spaces for guests’ enjoyment. There is a cozy library to relax and read one of their many books or perhaps borrow a board game. The light-filled Great Room features an ornate chandelier that was once in the grand-dame hotel, The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida. Guests who like to shop will especially appreciate the diverse and appealing shops including Katskill Kaleidoscope home of the world’s largest kaleidoscope, where we happily spent hours watching the kaleidoshows and looking at their vast collection of kaleidoscopes.

Adventure Kids having fun wih the Kaleidoscope
Outdoors, there are trails to hike, the opportunity to play a game or two of volleyball or one of their other games, fly fish on the Esopus Creek, or swim in the pool (during the summer months). We borrowed bicycles from the reception desk and took a leisurely morning ride discovering the property and the nearby area.

The Accommodations
We stayed inthe main building in a bi-level imperial king suite, which was a perfect weekend "home." We loved the size and the two-floor layout of the suite, which would also be perfect for longer-stays as well as for families. The first floor had a light filled living room with a sofa (sofa sleeper) and chair flanking a roundstone and wrought iron table, a bookcase with books to enjoy during our stay, a large flatscreen television, a desk and chair placed in front of the window perfect for admiring the view while writing or working on a laptop, and a gas fireplace to create a little romance. Other amenities included a safe, mini-refrigerator stocked with bottled water, and a Keurig coffee maker. Attractive art work capturing the beauty of the Catskills graced the walls and alarge mirror accented the space.
First Floor Suite View
The spacious bathroom on the first floor had a large walk-in shower with Swiss rainshower and side jets, a large jetted tub, toilet, a carved wood and white marble vanity with bowl sink that held an assortment of Beekman toiletries and a make-mirror, and a wooden stool placed next to the tub. A thoughtful touch was the make-up remover pads and black washcloth for discrete make-up removal. With an eye to reducing waste, the resort provides specially designed paper bags for guests to bring home their slightly used soap rather than have a usable product discarded.
Suite Bedroom
The loft bedroom on the second floor was like being in a luxurious tree house with its treetop and mountain views from the large windows. The king bed was dressed in pristine white linens with a colorful decorative pillow and orange throw at the end of the bed to complement and contrast with the dark wood headboard. Nightstands flanked the bed, a chest of drawers in front of the bed held a large television, and a long leather and wrought iron bench was placed on the side wall of the room. A closet held an iron and ironing board.
The large bathroom had a walk-in shower with Swiss rainshower and side jets, a toilet, and a carved wood and white marble vanity with bowl sink that held more Beekman amenities, a make-up mirror, and a hairdryer.
Enjoying a morning coffee
The suite had a private balcony off the living room, and we began our day sitting outside and enjoying steaming cups of coffee while listening to the sound of the Esopus Creek rushing over the rocks creating nature’s symphony against a lush backdropo f trees and Mount Tremper, creating a feast for the eyes, ears, and spirit.
The Restaurant – Woodside Grille
Woodside Grille
We had a wonderful dinner at Woodside Grille where the focus is on "Catskill CreativeCooking" and creative hand-crafted cocktails A few of the many highlights included their bourbon cocktail named The Paper Airplane, a starter of Smoked Gouda Fondue, and entrées of locally caught Beaverkill Trout paired with a spring vegetable whitebean stew, shaved fennel and radish, and Faroe Island Salmon paired with arugula-dill spaetzle, braised red cabbage, and crispy caper brown butter.
The Spa
The gorgeous6, 198 square foot Emerson Spa opened in September 2016 and offers a luxurious indulgence of spa treatments in their 10 treatment rooms, couples massage treatment room, as well as wellness and fitness classes. 17th century hand-carved Rajasthani palace gates
Welcome to the Spa
When we walked from the lobby through the 17th century hand-carved Rajasthani palace gates from India leading into the Spa we felt like had left our everyday cares behind as we stepped into the cool and tranquil setting. A definite highlight of the spa was the year-round whirlpool on the deck of the spa, where we relaxed and soaked up nature’s beauty surrounding us. Although we were there in the summer, we could imagine how inviting it would be to experience it in winter with snowflakes falling and a chill in the air.
