We recently discovered the intimate boutique hotel 1754 House located on the antiques trail in Woodbury, Connecticut. The Inn is gorgeous with gracious hospitality, an impressive beauty built before 1736 by Anthony Stoddard, opened as an Inn in 1754, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Chef/Owner Michael Bates-Walsh purchased "one of oldest inns in Connecticut" in March 2020, beautifully renovated the property and opened it in June 2020. The Inn has 7 charming and well-appointed guestrooms in the main house, and 4 additional guestrooms in The Carriage House, providing guests with the opportunity to reserve 1 guestroom or the entire space making it perfect for family getaways, wedding parties, or special event groups.

1754 House

We stayed at 1754 House in late November 2020 a few days after the Thanksgiving holiday and the Inn was dressed to impress for the Christmas holiday season. Magnolia wreaths graced the front and side doors, the pillars were majestically wrapped with magnolia leaves and evergreens creating a most inviting welcome on the attractive white Inn with black shutters.

Welcome!

Entering through the front door, we noticed the attractive railing leading to the second-floor guestrooms dressed with evergreens and lights and the reception area sparkled with holiday cheer with festive décor and sumptuous floral arrangements designed by Decorator Brenda Christie, Owner and Creative Director of Bouquets & Beyond (florals and events).

We stayed in the main house in Room 1, a spacious natural light-filled corner room with 3 large windows. The attractive guestroom had a stunning dark wood intricately carved 4 poster king bed with a Tempur-Pedic® mattress beautifully dressed in pristine ivory linens, a plethora of bed pillows, and an assortment of taupe and blue decorative pillows. Nightstands with large art glass lamps flanked the bed, and 2 ceiling lights provided additional light. A wing chair tucked into a corner of the room with a soft silver-gray throw flanked by a small table and lamp was the perfect place to sit and read one of the in-room magazines or the books we had brought with us. A large dark chest of drawers in another corner of the room held a large flat-screen, and beautiful landscape watercolors by the late Artist Brian Walsh, Chef/Owner Michael’s father, added interest to the room.

Chef/Owner Michael Bates-Walsh, CEC brings an impressive hospitality background to his Inn and Restaurant working at some of New England’s top hotels and restaurants, and there was a very tasty and gracious welcome gift of house-made caramel corn in a cellophane bag and 2 bottles of VOSS water on a drop-leaf table.

The large bathroom had a gray and white claw foot tub with wrap-around shower curtain making it perfect for a deep soak or to use as a shower, along with a toilet, vanity sink and a shadow box black framed mirror to hold your toiletries. Amenities included ECO Sciences toiletries and a hairdryer.

The Inn boasts 7 rooms in the main house, and 4 additional guestrooms in The Carriage House. The rooms in The Carriage House are handicap accessible with private baths and are connected to a common area where guests can mingle, making it perfect for small reunions, conferences, or longer-stays.

Main Dining Room

The Inn has 2 dining options for its guests, the Restaurant in the main dining room, or in the Tavern on the lower level. During our stay at the Inn we had a lovely dinner in the main dining room of the restaurant which was festively dressed for the holidays and had an inviting roaring wood fire in the large brick fireplace.

The menu was both approachable yet creative, with gorgeous presentations that delivered what they promised visually to the palate. Knowledgeable and attentive service ensured that we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. There were many highlights of our dinner including the Grilled Oysters with fennel and leek relish, the Pan-Seared Sea Scallops accompanied by sweet corn succotash, roasted red pepper, and herb vinaigrette, and the New York Strip special cut like a filet, and the Hand-Cut Fries with duck fat and seasoned with sea-salt. Perfectly crisp and presented in a small cast iron skillet, the fries were wonderful. There is a nice selection of interesting desserts on the menu, and of course, we tried 2 of them. In the morning, there were delicious scones with a maple glaze, fresh coffee, and lemon water, and a basket of apples for us to enjoy in the reception area before venturing out to explore Woodbury and the nearby area. Founded in 1673, Woodbury and the area has much to discover from the Glebe House Museum & Gertrude Jekyll Garden circa 1746, to antiques shops, galleries, craft breweries, and a winery, and after a perfect day of exploring, having dinner and a lovely stay at the 1754 House; a prefect "discovery."
