Chris Vincent & The Raw Deals – Good Crook was Engineered by Jake Eckert, Produced by Chris Vincent and released on Chris Vincent’s own label Chris Vincent / Nola Original Music. The release contains 12 original songs all written and arranged by Chris Vincent. Good Crook was tracked live, in single takes; there was no over dubs, no polish, no auto tune. What you hear is what you get, a deep and alive release.
The release opens with the title track, Good Crook, a song about love ending and how to move forward that kicks in with the hard driving drumming of Johnny Vidacovich and Chris Vincent stating the feelings through engaging lyrics, “I could have read you like a book, Low down dirty rascal any way you look, …. This shifts over and done.” The track, Midnight After All, paints the feelings of a relationship in question through the haunting baseline driven by Johnny Vidacovich and Dean Zucchero, and the statement lyrics from Chris, “I’d like to get you to change, …Time makes fools of us all, ….But it looks like you won’t.”
The track, Come Clean, is good old Blues pounding out emotion through great guitar licks and Chris’ statement style of lyrics. Bloody Mary Monday Morning is an entertaining down and dirty Delta Blues song capturing what it’s like being a bartender in New Orleans, “Bloody Mary Monday morning, Quickly turned to, Greyhound Monday afternoon…” The track, Screwdriver Keys, jazzes it up with funky guitar work that complements the drums as they build to multiple crescendos. The track, Half Block Cadillac, is a complement to the song, Screwdriver Keys, and they continue a similar build of vocals, guitar, and baseline to punch out the spirit of the song, “Bought a Cadillac, a half block long, spent too much, and it’s showing.”
The tracks, What Johnny Said and New Orleans, My Darling, are two poignant songs that contain a lifetime of experiences projected as ballads using Blues and heartfelt lyrics. The release closes with the tracks, Snakes, a slow and powerful Blues track with a Jazz undertone; the track Cows, an amusing track capturing a Cajun saying, “When the cows lie down, fish are biting,…” and the closing track, Catherine The Great, a reflection on Chris’ life as he states, “Life lived as a result of bad decisions, coupled with even worse timing,…Thankfully, …I pulled up on the stick before hitting the side of the mountain.”
Chris Vincent & The Raw Deals – Good Crook is a deep meaningful release that draws out feelings of joy, sorrow, and a look to the future. The release has great improvising coupled with grit and vision resulting in a commanding message.
