Kevin Peter Jones All-Star Band – Blues Alley was recorded live at the iconic Blues Alley in Washington, DC, Produced by Kevin Peter Jones, Executive Producers: Kevin Peter Jones and Harry Schnipper, and released on the Pacific Records label. The release marks Kevin Peter Jones as one of only four artists ever granted permission to release a live recording from the Blues Alley venue.
Blues Alley opens with a powerful rendition of The Cannon Ball Adderley Quintet classic, Walk Tall. The over 11 and a half minute track has this group of legendary musicians making a statement and pouring their souls into a magnificent opening track. The release follows up with the funky Jeff Lorber track, Hudson, a horn intense keyboard forward track that will have you swinging to a pulsating beat.
Valdez in the Country, written by Donny Hathaway, leads with a controlled drum beat that calls in the trumpet followed by Eric Marienthal on the Sax letting us know who is in charge. As I listened to the track it was so easy to get lost in thought and drift as the music captures your inner being. The track, You Don’t Know What Love Is, written by Gene De Pual and Don Raye, slows things down and lets the keyboards and trumpet capture the moment in a poignant track.
The Evening News, by Yellowjackets Russel Ferrante, William Kennedy and Bob Mintzer, lets things unwind and brings the pulse up and they let the beauty of improvisation ring through as each member
shows off their “stuff.” The Chick Corea classic, Blue Miles, is a fun track with mesmerizing guitar work against a solid baseline holding the Jazz phrasing strong and true to Chick’s sound.
The track, Solid, by Dean Brown, and Surreptitious, by Jeff Lorber are cutting edge with scintillating alluring melodies where you can close your eyes and let yourself relax and wander to the music. The release closes with the tracks from two of the band members, Alchemy East, from bassist Cheikh Ndoye, who lets his fingers do the talking over his bass as he does duets with guitarist, Dean Brown, and Trumpeter, Randy Brecker, and the closing track, Percussion Solo Castro, from Percussionist, Lenny Castro, a short but commanding way to capture the soul of this astounding release.
