A Sherlock Carol, Westport Country Playhouse, Westport, CT, USA

Westport Country Playhouse - A Sherlock Carol

Playwright and Director Mark Shanahan’s A Sherlock Carol at the Westport Country Playhouse in Westport, Connecticut is a delightful mélange of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (published in 1843) and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes (published in 1892). The result is an engaging story that will have you on the edge of your seats trying to solve “the crime.” We had the pleasure of seeing A Sherlock Carol again at the Westport Country Playhouse on opening night, Tuesday, December 17, 2024, and it was wonderful! The play runs until December 22, 2024.

A Sherlock Carol brings together Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters Sherlock Holmes played by Drew McVety, and Dr. Watson played by Joe Delafield, with Charles Dickens’ characters Ebenezer Scrooge played by Byron St. Cyr, and Dan Domingues as Dr. Timothy Cratchit (Tiny Tim is now an adult and is working as a doctor).

We first saw A Sherlock Carol when it made its world premiere Off-Broadway in New York City, which was nominated by the Off-Broadway Alliance for Best New Play in 2021. We saw it again last year at the Westport Country Playhouse. Since then, it has drawn a huge following and is currently playing across the United States, annually at London’s Marylebone Theatre, and has returned to the Westport Country Playhouse for its second year. We saw the play on opening night, December 17, 2024, and once again it was a delightful holiday romp. Well done, Mark Shanahan!

The talented and versatile cast play multiple wacky and zany characters that will have you laughing in the aisles with their outrageous behavior. In addition to playing Dr. Watson, Joe Delafield also plays the characters Mrs. Dilber, Henry Burke, and Old Joe Brackenridge. Dan Domingues plays Dr. Timothy Cratchit, as well as Mr. Topper, Ralph Fezziwig, and Constable Hopkins.

Also fabulous are Isabel Keating as The Countess of Morcar, (and Martha CratchitTim’s sister, Mary Morstan, Abigail Fezziwig, Caroler, and Woman in Restaurant), and Sharone Sayegh as Emma Wiggins (who also plays Fan Gardner, Inspector Lestrade, and Mrs. Windigate).

The set design by James J. Fenton is spectacular and the costumes by Linda Cho are sumptuous and transport the audience to Christmas Eve in London in 1894, where Sherlock Holmes, “the world’s greatest detective” who can solve any crime with his astute powers of observation, and remarkable memory to recall even the most minute of details, is asked to investigate the questionable death of his friend, Ebenezer Scrooge.
