Kevin Burt & Big Medicine – Thank You Brother Bill was engineered by Richard Shultz and Jon Limmer, recorded at The Sound Box Recording Studio, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and released on the Gulf Coast Records label. This is Kevin Burts second release on the Gulf Coast Records label.
The release is a tribute to the music of Bill Withers, a music legend who had a major influence on Kevin Burt and as Kevin expounds, “Listening to Bill Withers tell a story or sing a song for me is one and the same. It Instantly attaches itself to my soul.” The challenge of paying tribute by covering the songs of a three-time Grammy Award Winner and a music legend is a daunting task, but Kevin’s interpretations allowed the story to still shine while the music rang true to its original heartfelt structure.
The opening track, Who Is He (and What Is He To You)? has a more Bluesy flavor than the original but Kevin’s vocals are right on and at times his vocals sound like Bill Withers singing. Keeping with a bend to the Blues is the cover of the track Kissing My Love that features a punchy baseline and Kevin’s extraordinary harmonica.
The track World Keeps Going Round and Round holds to the tempo and original format and is accented by Kevin’s Bluesy vocals and sassy guitar work. The classic track Just the Two of Us is a poignant cover with a beautiful harmonica entry moving to Kevin’s emotional vocals creating that familiar “tug at the heart” feeling I have every time I hear this classic track.
Leaning on the Blues elements is the track I’m Her Daddy that is a special cover with Kevin’s guitar work and his moving vocals. The classic track Ain’t No Sunshine is layered with fancy guitar segments to open the track that fronts Kevins’ touching rendition of this gut-wrenching song. The emotionally filled track Lean On Me features a solid bassline that accentuates the heartwarming feeling of this track and complements Kevin’s vocal interpretation.
Other Bill Wither memorable tracks are Let Us Love, Another Day To Run, Grandma’s Hands, The Same Love That Made Me Laugh and Hope She’ll Be Happier all of which are covered by Kevin with a feeling of respect and reverence to a legend that not only does justice but allows the music to recapture the feeling each song had the first time they were heard.
