We saw The Rocky Horror Show on opening night, Saturday, March 18, 2023, where the intimate theatre-in-the-round drew a following of "Rocky" fans. Richard O’Brien was an out-of-work actor when he wrote the play in 1973, which combines his love of science fiction, B-movie horror films, and rock music. The adult-themed, counterculture, sexually charged musical played on the London stage for 7 years closing in 1980, made its way to Broadway and continues to tour the world. When the film version came out in 1975, it became a cult classic that is still shown regularly, usually at midnight. As a tradition, "Rocky" followers will shout out lines, will often show up in costume, and bring props (although props are not allowed for the MTC production).
Skye Gillespie (Janet), Michael Luongo (Brad)
The Rocky Horror Show
The premise of the play is that a young couple, Brad and Janet, played by Michael Luongo (who played Brad in the National Tour), and Skye Gillespie (who played in the regional production of The Rocky Horror Show) are on their way back from a wedding and are driving to meet Brad’s college professor Dr. Scott, played by Broadway veteran John Tracey Egan, when their car has a flat tire on a lonely and deserted road on a stormy and rainy night in the middle of nowhere. It is the perfect plot for a horror movie.
Leigh Martha Klinger (Magenta), Hillary Ekwall (Columbia)
The Rocky Horror Show
The setting of the play takes place long before the advent of cell phones and as they are stuck in the middle of nowhere, Brad tells Janet to remain in the car and he will walk to the castle that they passed a few miles back and ask if he can use their telephone to call for assistance. Young and naïve but not stupid, Janet insists that she accompany him rather than wait alone in the car not knowing what could happen to either of them.
Leigh Martha Klinger (Magenta), Justin Johnston (Frank ‘N’ Furter)
Jeff Raab (Riff Raff)
The Rocky Horror Show
When they reach the castle, tired and soaked to the skin, they get more than they had bargained for when the castle door opens, and they meet a host of crazy characters that invite them in and out of the rain and things go south from there.
Hillary Ekwall (Columbia), John Tracey Egan (Eddie)
The Rocky Horror Show
Characters include Riff Raff played by Jeff Rabb, his sister Magenta played by Leigh Martha Klinger, Columbia played by Hillary Ekwall, Phantom 1 and Usherette played by Brianna Bauch, Phantom 2 played by Stephen Petrovich, the one-and-only Frank ‘N’ Furter head of the castle played by Broadway actor Justin Johnston, and Domenic Servidio as "the creature with the Charles Atlas body" as the title character Rocky. MTC’s Co-Founder Jim Schilling plays The Narrator, and the two-act, fast-paced musical goes by in a blink of an eye.

Complementing the outrageous and offbeat plot, the music is rock perfect with memorable songs including The Time Warp where "Rocky" fans get the chance to sing and dance at the end of the musical. So, if you are looking for a bit of campy fun, polish up your Time Warp moves and go and see The Rocky Horror Show. The musical runs until April 8, 2023.
