Vertigo Dance Company “Pardes” at The Quick Center, Fairfield, CT, USA

Fairfield County is blessed with an amazing cultural treasure in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts ("The Quick") located at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut. We have attended performances at The Quick for many years, and every year their season is a dream for patrons with its offerings of diverse lectures, concert series, plays, Met Opera: HD Live, dance performances, art receptions, and much more. Sourcing talent from renowned national and international performance groups, The Quick delivers a rich cultural diversity of art forms.

On Wednesday, January 18, 2022, we had the immense pleasure of experiencing a contemporary dance performance by the Vertigo Dance Company perform their composition, "Pardes," sponsored by The Consulate General of Israel to New England. What is especially notable about the company is that it was founded in 1992 by Noa Wertheim and Adi Sha’al and is one of the four leading dance companies in Israel.

For the Vertigo Dance Company performance of "Pardes" there was a minimalist set without scenery, to not detract from the dancers and their movements. With only monochromatic walls that acted as a background for the eight dancers, Choreographer Noa Wertheim creatively used a variety of shadow effects at different times during the engaging performance to maximize the impact with the shadows dramatizing and mimicking the dancers’ fluid movements, with the result that the shadows became immense "dancers" themselves. As with most things in life, oftentimes less is more, and the bare stage enhanced the dramatic elements of the dance with elegance and style.

Contemporary Dance is about the fluidity of movement, the sensuousness of the physicality of the body, and to capture the imagination and engage the spirit. Hauntingly beautiful, the Vertigo Dance Company’s performance of "Pardes" will resonant in patrons’ minds long after the many standing ovations that the talented group received. Bravo!
