We spent a perfect Sunday afternoon at The Cutting Room in New York City for the launch party for Pat Petrillo’s new album, The Pat Petrillo Big Rhythm Band – The Power Station Sessions released on the Autumn Hill Records label. While we had reviewed the album, we had never heard him play live before and thought it was high time that we did. It proved to be an extra special afternoon listening to sensational live instrumental jazz.

On Sunday, October 9, 2022, we went to The Cutting Room in New York City for the launch party of The Pat Petrillo Big Rhythm Band – The Power Station Sessions, and it was a perfect afternoon listening to live jazz in an intimate venue. Pat and the band played all of the songs on the new release from a few songs from his prior album, The Abbey Road Sessions.

Joining Pat Petrillo on drums, were his band comprised of Jeff Levine on organ, B.D. Lenz on guitar, Greg Novak on bass, horn section: Gary, Jim, Steve Jankowski on trumpet, Tom Timko on tenor and soprano saxophone, and Meredith Forman on alto saxophone.

Pat and the band opened with one of Pat’s songs entitled, Global Warming, which kicked the performance into high gear. Next on the playlist, was a Steely Dan song, Black Cow, which Pat told the audience was named for a candy, followed by a fantastic instrumental cover of the Billy Joel song, Big Man on Mulberry Street, which was smoking hot with his 5-member horn section, and B.D. Lenz working his magic on the guitar, and Jeff Levine layering in some fine organ.

Pat introduced the next song, 48th Street, which he said will be released as a single in November, as an homage to the actual 48th Street in New York City, where back in its day was where all the musicians would go to hang out and buy their equipment. While "music row" is no more, Pat keeps its memory vibrant and alive with his new composition.

Bringing on the Jersey sound, the band kicked into Asbury Daze, then slid into a smooth jazz groove with the cover of the 1976 Stevie Wonder song, Knocks Me Off My Feet, off Stevie’s Songs in the Key of Life album.

Reverting to Pat’s prior 2019 release, The Abbey Road Sessions, the band segued into the 1968 Paul McCartney song, Martha My Dear, which Pat explained Paul wrote for his dog. Keeping with The Beatles theme, next up was the song Lady Madonna, followed by what Pat described as one of his and wife’s favorite Beetles songs, Got to Get You into My Life, which he did as a mashup of The Beatles and Earth, Wind, & Fire.

Pat conjured up the spirit of New Orleans with the song, Hey, Pocky Way featuring B.D. Lenz on guitar, followed by cover of the 1977 Earth, Wind & Fire song, Runnin’ off their All ‘n Album, which Pat included on his new album, The Power Station Sessions, to deftly close out the performance. If you love instrumental jazz lead by a masterful drummer, if you get a chance to attend one of his upcoming performances, we highly recommend you do so, and in the meantime, we hope that you will pick up a copy of The Pat Petrillo Big Rhythm Band – The Power Station Sessions and give it a listen.
