Matt Andersen
The 13-track blues release opens with the song, What Would Your Mama Say, written by Matt Andersen and Craig Northey, which shows Matt’s songwriting prowess on this catchy number that sets the expectations on high for the rest of the release.
Next up is Free Man, another Matt Andersen/Craig Northey collaboration, which gets its groove from The McCrary Sisters adding their lovely vocals, and its punch from the horns and organ. Matt and the band slide into the slow and sultry Something To Lose, which Matt wrote with Amy Helm, who adds her amazing vocals to Matt’s that make this song a winner.
Matt Andersen and Ian Janes share the songwriting credits on The Bed I Made, which has a great instrumental opening that sets the pace. The release continues with Give Me Some Light, a song written by Matt Andersen, Tom Wilson and Jessie O’Brien, that hits all the right notes as Matt and the band create a bit of musical magic on this one.
Better Than You Want, a Matt Andersen/Steve Dawson upbeat song with punch, opens with strong guitar riffs that flow effortlessly, and combined with Jim Hoke, Charles Rose, and Steve Hermann adding horns, and The McCrary Sisters’ vocals, it just cooks.
Next on the play list is Gasoline, written by Matt Andersen and Chris Kirby, that gets its kick from Jay Bellrose’s drum opening that keeps the Blues in high gear. Over Me, written by Matt Andersen, Tom Wilson and Thompson Wilson slows the pace, so grab your special someone and dance up close.
Help Yours Elf, a big booming song written by Matt Andersen and Terra Lightfoot follows. Matt Andersen and Tom Wilson collaborate again on Long Rider, which once heard will have you singing along with Matt and The McCrary Sisters on this catchy tune.
The release segues into another great track, Take Me Back, written by Matt Andersen, Ross Neilsen, and Tom Wilson, then deftly slides into Been My Last, written by Matt Andersen and Donovan Woods. The release closes with the song, Quarter On The Ground (A Song For Uncle Joe), which Matt wrote for his Uncle Joe. In the liner notes, Matt wrote, "This album is dedicated to my Uncle Joe. He always bought five copies of everything I made and kept them in the plastic… "They’re gonna be worth a lot of money someday." The song is a fitting tribute to Matt’s Uncle Joe, the uncle who was always there for him, and had me remembering my own Uncle Joe, as well as all the "Uncle Joes" who brighten our days through their unending support and love.
Until next time, keep enjoying the music!
