A Flea In Her Ear
On Tuesday, July 17, 2018 we had the immense pleasure of experiencing American playwright David Ives‘ new version of French Playwright Georges Feydeau’s (1862-1921) farce, A Flea In Her Ear. Directed by Westport Country Playhouse’s Artistic Director Mark Lamos, the co-production with Resident Ensemble Players of The University of Delaware was brilliant. Fast-paced dialogue and seamless comedic timing made the play a joyful delight to watch.
John Rensenhouse (Ferraillon), Robert Adelman Hancock (Rugby)
A Flea In Her Ear
Set in Paris in 1900, a little misunderstanding puts a "flea in the ear" of Raymonde Chandebise played by Elizabeth Heflin who thinks that her husband Victor Chandebise played by Lee E. Ernst is having an affair. This misconception leads to gaiety and hilarity as she enlists her friend Lucienne Homenides de Histangua played by Antoinette Robinson to aid her in trying to catch her husband in the act. Thus begins the farce that kept getting better with each Act.
Stephen Pelinski (Tournel), Elizabeth Heflin (Raymonde)
A Flea In Her Ear
Add in a crazy cast of characters – Camille Chandebise, Victor’s and Raymonde’s live-in nephew played by Mic Matarrese, Etienne the Chandebise’s long-suffering butler played by David Beach, his lusty wife Antoinette the Chandebise’s housekeeper played by Carine Montbertrand, Stephen Pelinkski as the handsome womanizer Romain Tournel who is Victor’s friend, Don Carlos de Histangua the overly jealous husband of Lucienne, played to the hilt by Michael Gotch, and Dr. Finache the Chandebise’s doctor played by Hasan El-Anin.
Robert Adelman Hancock (Rugby), Lee E. Ernst (Victor, Poche)
A Flea In Her Ear
Things really heat up at the Frisky Puss hotel where clandestine rendezvous await with great humor with John Resenhause as the hotel manager Ferraillon, Deena Burke as his wife Olympia, Laura Frye as the hotel’s chambermaid Eugenie, Robert Adelman Hancock as Rugby the British hotel guest, and Wynn Harmon as Baptiste, the drunk old man who provides the perfect cover for trysting lovers. Add in a doppelganger for Victor Chandebise and you have a smart play that lacks for nothing.

Lavish costume designs by Sara Jean Tosetti and a beautiful period set designed by Kristen Robinson transported the audience to Paris 1900. The large cast of 14 worked together like a well-oiled piece of machinery, resulting in a play well worth seeing again! Bravo!
