Fifth State Seville Gin
is the creation of Master Distiller Robert Schulten, owner of Fifth State Distillery located in Bridgeport,
Connecticut, which was awarded the 2021 Connecticut
Gin Distillery of the Year by the prestigious New York
International Spirits Competition. He handcrafts this delectable gin
from locally grown Connecticut corn and Seville oranges, which is distilled in small
batches in a column still. The result is a smooth and richly flavorful orange
forward gin that is an admirable ingredient in cocktail and culinary recipes.
Product Information:
Fifth State Seville Gin, 47% Alcohol by Volume, 94 proof. Gluten-free. Column-distilled
from corn and handcrafted in small batches.
Bottle Notes: "Our
Steady Habits, Connecticut, known as the "Land of Steady Habits" was the fifth
state to join the Union in 1788 and we are proud to name our distillery after
our home state. Our focus is to create spirits that are honest, authentic, and
free of additives or artificial flavors. We make traditional spirits with bold
and distinctive flavors using only Connecticut corn. We are proud to support
family farms and believe that origin matters. We bring you the best of
Connecticut in our handcrafted small-batch spirits. We hope you will enjoy our
spirits as much as we do, and you will join us on our adventure! The Fifth
State Team"
Tasting Notes:
Layers of rich, aromatic botanicals and bitter orange on the nose that follow
through on the palate with a lasting and slightly spicy delicious finish. Chill
and sip neat or over ice, use in cocktails, as well as in culinary recipes.
Luxury Experience was "In the
kitchen and behind the bar®" creating incredibly special handcrafted cocktails and a culinary
recipe to tempt your palate and inspire your own creations using Fifth State Seville
Gin.

For our
cocktail, Luxury Experience - Absinthe Minded Professor, we blended

Rosso Blood Orange, lemon juice, and fresh lime juice, and gave it the
"absinthe ritual" by drizzling the cocktail over a sugar cube perched on an
absinthe spoon.

The Culinary Recipe
Our inspiration for Luxury

Method: Using a food
processor, add egg yolks and sugar, and process until smooth. Add cornstarch to
create a "slurry" and process until smooth. Heat the milk and half & half
in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
With the food processor running,
when the milk mixture has bubbles starting to form (but not boiling) at the
side of the pan, slowly add one small ladle of the hot milk to the egg sugar
mix. Process until smooth. This is to "temper the eggs" so they will not
curdle. Continue to slowly add one ladle of the hot milk to the egg sugar
mixture and process until all the milk has been added to the food processor.
Return mixture to the saucepan and continue to cook 2 minutes over medium heat
until thickened. Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then cover with plastic
wrap so skim does not form on top. Set aside. When cool, refrigerate for
several hours or overnight.

Method: Add water, sugar to
a small saucepan, and set aside. Peel orange (with a vegetable peeler) into
long thin strips. Trim peels to even sides and make them the same length. Add
peel and remaining peel scraps to the saucepan and bring to a boil to candy the
peels. Once the sugar water has evaporated, turn the peels out onto parchment
paper, then bake in a low oven (220 degrees Fahrenheit / 104 degrees Celsius)
to dry the peels. Remove from oven and let cool. Can be made 1 day ahead.
Assembly: Line presentation
plate with strips of parchment or wax paper. This will allow you keep your
plate clean when frosting the cake. Simply slide them out once you have
completed frosting the cake.
Cut cake in half, place one half
of cake cut side up on the plate. Brush cut side with a mixture of 0.25-ounce Fifth
State Seville Gin and 0.25-ounce simple syrup.
Add one-third of the frosting to a
pastry bag (or plastic bag with small end cut off). Pipe frosting around the
perimeter of the cake. (This will prevent the pastry cream filling from seeping
out.
Add a smooth layer of pastry cream
inside the ring of frosting. Brush remaining cake half cut side up with the
Fifth State Seville Gin and simple syrup. Place cake cut side down on top of
the pastry cream. Gently press to hold the cake together.
Frost cake with frosting using a
metal spatula to evenly spread the frosting to cover the cake. Use extra
frosting in the pastry bag to garnish the cake. Top with candied orange peels.
Presentation: Serve cake with
pairing cocktail, Luxury Experience - Inverse.
Until next time, cheers, it's
cocktail time!
