For those lucky enough to have attended a John Mayall concert, you know the energy that John, Greg, and Jay produce, and with John Mayall – Three For The Road – A 2017 Live Recording, the recording deftly captures the excitement and energy of the audience in Dresden and Stuttgart, Germany on March 24 and 26, 2017, that begins with the introduction, and continues to abundantly flow effortlessly.

Born in the United Kingdom in 1933, John Mayall was inducted in the American Blues Hall of Fame in 2016, a well-deserved honor to go along with his prestigious OBE (Order of the British Empire) award for his contribution to the arts. At the age of 84, John Mayall continues to record and perform, and John Mayall – Three For The Road – A 2017 Live Recording, marks another milestone in a long career paved with exceptional highlights.

The first song on the release is the Eddie Taylor (1923 – 1985) song, Big Town Playboy, which opens with some straight driving harmonica, and is the perfect vehicle for Blues harmonica master John Mayall. Something that John Mayall includes in the liner notes on all his releases, is the key in which the song is played in, for those that want to play along and become an unofficial "fourth member" of the band. If you want to play along, the song is played in the Key of A.

Next on the play list is the Sam Hopkins ("Lightnin’ Hopkins" 1912 – 1982) lament, I Feel So Bad, played in the Key of E, which opens with John Mayall working his fingers on the keyboard, then the band slides into The Sum Of Nothing written by Blues-Rocker Curtis Salgado, which is another great keyboard driven opening that just feels so good, followed by Jay Davenport wailing away on the drums to add the right amount of spice to one fabulous song. (Play this in the Key of C.)

John Mayall and the band play one of John’s own songs, Streamline, a keyboard driven opening for a perfect Blues song. (Play this in the Key of G.) The bandsegues into Tears Came Rollin’ Down written by Henry J. Townsend (1909 – 2006) played in the Key of C.

The release continues with the Lionel Hampton (1908- 2002) and Dan Burley (1907 – 1962) song, Ridin’ On The L & N, which has great lyrics and rhythms that will have you grooving and clapping along with Greg and Jay Davenport as John wails on the harmonica. This song resonated heavily with the audience with its encouraging cheers. (Play this song in the Key of Bb.)

Next comes the great Jerry Lynn Williams’ (1948 – 2005) song, Don’t Deny Me (Play this song in the Key of C.) Getting near the end of the of the release, John and the band slow the pace with another John Mayall song, Lonely Feelings, which had the audience calling out their appreciation. (Play this in the Key of Ab.)

John Mayall and the band close out the release with Congo Square, a Sonny Landreth, Dave Raonson, Mel Melton song, which opens with John on harmonica and then settles into John playing some hot keyboards with Greg Rzab holding the groove on bass guitar, and Jay Davenport on drums for a fabulous finish. (Play this in the Key of D.)

Until next time, keep enjoying the music!
