Hotel Adlon Spa, Berlin, Germany After visiting the Hotel Adlon Spa, it is easy to see how the Hotel Adlon Kempinski celebrating its centenary birthday stays so young.

It was March 2007, the height of ITB (International Travel Berlin, the large travel show held each March in Berlin), and our bodies were exhausted after spending days walking the exhibition floor. We arrived at the Hotel Adlon Spa, with the express desire of having massages, however, with their extensive massage menu, we felt that it was best to consult with the Spa specialists to determine which massage was the best for our needs.

After considering our seemingly unlimited choices: Aroma Oil, Manual Lymphatic, Foot Reflexology, Balinese, Deep Tissue (rebalancing, rolfing), Ayurvedic, Oil-Salt, Hawaiian Healing (lumi-lumi-nui), Mood, or Yin-Yang, Swedish, Reiki, Craniosacral, Dorn, and Hot Chocolate, we decided to experience an Aroma Oil massage (Edward), and a Hot Chocolate massage (Debra).

Debra: I arrived at the Hotel Adlon Spa eager to experience a new massage treatment. Although Edward had already experienced a Hot Chocolate massage, I had never experienced this, and I was very eager to try what sounded like a heavenly treatment. As a confirmed chocoholic, what would not be to like about a massage to help my body regain balance, harmony, and revitalize my skin? The thought of having my body massaged with hot chocolate had me conjuring up images of the movie, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and falling into a vat of chocolate, however, my massage therapist, Anja Schröde, quickly altered my illusion by informing me that she would be using cacao essence, and not melted chocolate for the massage. Okay, so with that thought, I must admit that there was a little bit of a letdown, but then I remembered the healthy aspects of the hot chocolate treatment: 1) namely a soothing massage; 2) cacao contains flavenol antioxidants purported to improve blood flow, reduce blood pressure, as well as assist in the anti-aging process; 3) cacao has moisturizing properties and contains caffeine which would energize my skin; and 4) most importantly, although the treatment would smell fabulous with cacao essence hanging seductively in the air above my head like a delicious cloud, there would no calories added.

I spent the next hour literally soaking up the hot chocolate benefits as Anja massaged by body working out any knot that she found in my back and the poor overworked calves muscles. At the end of the treatment, my skin felt fabulously smooth with the lingering aroma of cacao. I took a shower to remove the excess oils and felt energized and ready to run the marathon in Berlin, or at least run as far as the nearest bakery or chocolate shop to indulge in a decadent chocolate sweet; because a girl can only take so such chocolate temptation without giving in to the desire!

Edward: I was definitely excited about a whole body Aroma oil massage with essential oils, as this is one of my favorite massages.  Depending on your mood, time of day, or your current state of mind, the therapist can customize the Aroma oils for your massage to relax, rejuvenate, or energize you. Therapist Heidrun Bühler asked what type of massage I would like, and knowing that Debra had an afternoon of shopping at KaDeWe planned, I asked for the energizing aromas. The combination of a massage with oils to work out the tired muscles, along with the gentle aromas to energize my spirit, mind, and wallet (another state of mind), was the perfect treatment for this day. I enjoy many other types of massage treatments, but I have found that the Aroma oil massage is the right massage when you need a break between a hectic morning and an exciting evening. It is not overly exertive on the muscles, but works out those kinks, while the selection of your desired aroma creates the prefect complement. The time flew and before I knew it I was energized and ready for my next adventure of shopping (carrying Debra's bags) at KaDeWe.

Hotel Adlon Spa - relaxing areaAfterwards, we relaxed at the comfortable pool bar where we enjoyed a selection of inviting flavored waters and teas, while we compared notes on our massage treatments, which we both enjoyed. While the Hot Chocolate massages may have been new (to Debra), this will definitely be a massage that we will be experiencing again in the future.

The 800-square meter Adlon Spa features an 11-meter pool heated to a delightful 27° C (80.6° F), relaxing pool bar, Jacuzzi, steam bath, saunas, massage studio, gym, solarium, and luxurious Guerlain products. The spa offers a full-range of treatments including facials, beauty services, massages, body peeling, and body wrapping.

The Hotel Adlon Spa is open daily from 6:30 am – 10:00 pm.
