Greenwich Polo Club – East Coast Silver Cup Final – Flyhouse vs Round Hill, Greenwich, CT, USA

It was another exhilarating Sunday afternoon of high-stakes polo in Backcountry Greenwich, Connecticut at the Greenwich Polo Club as Flyhouse and Round Hill competed for the East Coast Silver Cup Final. Mojo kept the party going all afternoon with great music in the CTC&G Players’ Lounge, as The Cup Bearer Bartenders created creative and refreshing cocktails. Polo is fast, exciting, and the place to be for a Summer of meeting, mingling, and family fun. Polo matches take place at the Greenwich Polo Club on Sundays throughout the Summer with the last polo match of the season taking place on September 13, 2026.

Team and Players – Flyhouse

Team and Players – Round Hill 

Player Positions 

Position 1 is the attacking position.
Position 2 is the offensive position. Position 1 and 2 are the “forwards.”
Position 3 is the tactical leader (and usually the best player on the team).
Position 4 plays defense.

Handicaps

Players are given a handicap level from -2 to 10 goals depending on their ability, with -2 the lowest, and 10 goal the highest possible. A 10-goaler player is considered the best and there are less than 100 players who have achieved this ranking. Handicaps are evaluated throughout the year and the number assigned in goals is the player’s value to the team, not the number of goals expected from the player.

The ranking of “0” notes that the player holds Amateur status. A team’s handicap is calculated by adding the 4 players’ handicaps together.

Chukker 1: Round Hill came out strong and made 2 goals to 1 scored by Flyhouse with 4:18 remaining, followed by another goal by Round Hill with 3 minutes remaining. Not to be outdone, Flyhouse made 2 more goals with the last one with 27 seconds remaining, to close chukker 1 with a tied score of 3-3.

Chukker 2: Flyhouse could not be beat in chukker 2 scoring 4 goals closing out chukker 2 with a score of 7-3.

Chukker 3: Round Hill scored a goal early in chukker 3 with 6:25 minutes remaining bringing the score 7-4. Flyhouse scored another goal, and with 2:25 minutes remaining, Round Hill scored again, closing out the chukker 8-5 in favor of Flyhouse.

The Traditional Stomping of the Divots

After Chukker 6 there was the traditional Stomping of the Divots to stomp the grass back in place from the horses’ hooves charging across the field.

Chukker 4: 1 minute into chukker 4, Flyhouse made a quick goal bringing the score 9-5 in their favor, however, with 3:54 minutes remaining, Round Hill scored, followed by a final goal, narrowing the gap to 9-8 in favor of Flyhouse.

Chukker 5: Flyhouse made a quick goal into chukker 5, followed by back-and-forth goals by the 2 teams. A penalty shot at the end tied the score 11-11.

Round Hill GOAL!!

Chukker 6: Both teams were well-matched scoring goals. There was a foal goal scored seconds before the close of chukker 6 ending in a tied score of 14-14.

Flyhouse GOAL!!

Overtime: When a chukker ends in a tie, the match goes into overtime. The first team to score a goal wins the match. Flyhouse came out flying and scored a quick goal winning them the match and the title (and trophies) for the East Coast Silver Cup.

Following the match there was an Awards Ceremony followed by traditional Argentine Asado (Barbecue), and plenty of music and dancing in the CTC&G Players’ Lounge. Another perfect Sunday of polo in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Greenwich Polo Club Information

Greenwich Polo Club gates open on Sunday at 1:00 pm, matches start at 3:00 pm and end by 5:00 pm. An Award Ceremony and traditional Argentine Asado (Barbecue) follows the matches to continue the party atmosphere.

Ticket Options

Children under the age of 12 do not require a ticket to enter the Greenwich Polo Club.

Parking is sold separately unless indicated. Parking passes are $15 online in advance and $20 at the door. Parking passes are required only for vehicles that will be parked on site. Drop-offs do not require a parking pass.

Lawn Picnic Seating on East Side of the Field and Grandstand Bleachers:
$30/Ticket person

East Lawn Umbrella (North & South):
Car Pass Ticket $250 Front Row, $175 Second Row (6 guests. Lawn Picnic seating on the East Side of the Field with Reserved Umbrella). Includes 1 parking pass.

East Lawn Cabana:
$750 (- includes 5 parking passes, 20 tickets.

West Lawn Club:
Premium Table and Umbrella with 6 seats *reserved on the front lawn with 2 parking passes)

Chukkers

The match is divided into 6 periods called Chukkers, which lasts 7.5 minutes each. After the 3^rd chukker, there is the traditional stomping of the divots to replace the grass that the galloping horses’ hooves raise.

The Field

Polo is played on a field that is 300 yards by 160 yards (the size of 10 football fields.)

Polo Ponies

Although they are called polo ponies, they are full-grown horses. Each player typically brings 6-8 polo ponies (or more) to use in a match. Horses are swapped throughout the match to keep the horses and their riders fresh. The top speed of a polo pony is 35 mph, and the speed of a polo ball can reach 100 mph.

Interesting to note, if you look closely at our photos, you will notice that the horses have their manes cut closely, and their tails are braided. This is to prevent the players’ mallets from getting tangled in them during the match.

Goals

There are 2 goal posts at each end of the field. When a team scores a goal, the teams switch direction of the play, this keeps the conditions even throughout the match.
