March has become the month of wines, and that was the case for a fun day of wine and food at the Slow Wine NY 2026 held at Eataly, Liberty Street, Manhattan, NY on March 9, 2026. With more than 200 wines from 38 producers representing the global wine market and coupled with the outstanding food provided by Eataly, and add in an amazingly warm day in New York, you could not ask for anything more.
If you are not familiar with the Slow Wine initiative, it starts with the simple statement, “Slow Food believes that wine, just as with food, must be good, clean, and fair – not just good.” As wine is an agricultural product, it has an impact on the people who produce the wine, the environment, and the consumers who enjoy the wine. The Slow Wine USA tour, which started in California, moved on to Texas before closing out the US tour in New York, brought together small-scale winemakers who use traditional techniques, respect their environment and terroir, and safeguard biodiversity of grape varieties that are part of the wine heritage.
The first thing I noticed, as I worked my way through the numerous stations, was not only the pride each producer had in their product, but their extreme passion to talk about their techniques, focus on biodiversity, and attention to the environment, sometimes more than talking about the grape varietals or taste profile of their wine.
A few of the of the principles that each producer abides by:
- Wineries must grow 70% of the grapes used in the product
- Wineries may not use chemically synthesized fertilizers, herbicides, or anti-botrytis fungicides
- Dependence on irrigation systems must be limited and should only aim to avoid critical water-stress conditions
- Winery buildings must respect their environmental surroundings and should take sustainability into account
- Wineries should not utilize techniques like reverse osmosis or other physical methods of must concentration.
