Having spent a significant amount of time visiting New Orleans throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to experience and appreciate the long tradition of the brass bands that are the quintessential sound of New Orleans.
The Rebirth Brass Band, founded by brothers Phillip and Keith Frasier in 1983, takes the traditional brass band sound of New Orleans and then deftly blends in modern brass band rhythms and brass funk to the mix to create a delicious "gumbo" adding their mark on the future of New Orleans brass band music. Traveling the world, they introduce new audiences to the history, the tradition, and the culture of New Orleans and this original music genre.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to see the Rebirth Brass Band perform at the Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut, and Luxury Experience has also had the pleasure of reviewing their previous release, Rebirth Brass Band - Rebirth of New Orleans, which won a 2011 Grammy® for Best Regional Roots Music Album.
The Rebirth Brass Band - Move Your Body release opens with the traditional song, Lord, Lord, Lord, You've Been Good To Me that is a mix of gospel and the New Orleans brass band sound, and then segues into original material with Rebirth Makes You Dance written by band members Keith Frasier, and Chadrick Honore that is guaranteed to do just that.
Next in the line-up is the title track, Move Your Body, written by Derrick Tabb, Derrick Shezbie, and Chadrick Honore, followed by Rebirth Groove, written by band members Chadrick Honore, Phillip Frazier, Glen Andrews, and Derrick Tabb, which keeps the New Orleans groove going.
Texas Pete, written by band member Stafford Agee, may be my favorite instrumental track on the release. The blend of solos, along with the rich addition of Javon Carter's tuba, makes this "recipe" delicious.
HBNS, written Derrick Shezbie, has the added bonus of the vocals of Erica Falls and Quinten "Q" Spears, and has killer drum work with Derrick Tabb working his magic on the snare drum.
Additional songs written by the band members include On My Way, written by Vincent Broussard, Who's Rockin' Who's Rollin' written by the Rebirth Brass Band, Take ‘Em To The Moon written by Gregory Veals which is a deft combination of Gregory's prowess on the trombone, Derrick Tabb's smoking drum solo, and the band's ability to layer in multiple horns to maximize the groove.
Along the way, the band interprets the 1972 Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina song, Your Mama Don't Dance, and then closes the release with the track, What Are We Gonna Do?/Banner Man, which is a combination that begins with What Are We Gonna Do? written by Paul Blaize, Rodney Williamson, Steven Workman, and then segues into Banner Man written by the Rebirth Brass Band.
If you are looking for a release to jump start your summer, Rebirth Brass Ban - Move Your Body is just the ticket.
