Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican White Whiskey Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey made with Native Oaxacan White Corn brings another exceptional spirit to Mexico's rich spirits heritage of making mezcal, tequila and xtabentun. Master Distiller Doug French, the creator of Scorpion Mezcal, has ventured into the whiskey market making corn whiskey from native Oaxacan corn. As would be expected from the talented Mr. French, Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey made with Native Oaxacan White Corn is a truly exceptional product. 

 

Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican White WhiskeyInformation: Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey made with Native Oaxacan White Corn is made from 85% Heritage Corn and 15% Malted Barley that is double distilled. Made in a single barrel in a copper pot still, the whiskey is aged for approximately 10 months in French Oak. 45% Alcohol by Volume (90 proof). Each bottle lists the barrel number and each bottle as a bottle number. The back of each bottle proudly bears the signature of Master Distiller Doug French. With a price tag of around $60 bottle, Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey made with Native Oaxacan White Corn is a luxury whiskey that fully delivers the flavor goods.  

Tasting Notes: On the nose, it has a lovely sweet and fruit notes along with vanilla and almond. On the palate the taste has a subtle sweetness, ripe apricot, vanilla, and warm nutty flavors with a rich, smooth with slightly spicy finish.  

We first met Master Distiller Doug French many years ago when we worked with him and Barbara Sweetman, US Director of Sales, on their truly spectacular Scorpion Mezcal product line, so when Barbara told us about Doug's latest creation, Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey made with native Oaxacan corn, we were intrigued. With Mexico's long spirits history of making mezcal, tequila, and xtabentun, our thought was why whiskey and why is it being made from corn? Barbara chuckled and explained that Oaxaca is actually "the cradle of corn" dating back thousands of years, and Doug thought that it was the perfect time to create luxury whiskey.  

Something of a pioneer, Doug is bringing ancient seeds back from extinction and as the corn comes in all colors of the rainbow, leave it to him to create a series of whiskeys made from the different varieties of corn - white, yellow, black, and purple, thus far. Each of the whiskeys are made in a single barrel in a copper pot still then aged in French Oak for approximately 10 months; the result is pure pleasure in a glass, with heady, aromatic notes, a rich mouth feel and a delectably long finish.  

Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey made with Native Oaxacan White Corn is a gorgeously made whiskey that slides on the palate as smooth as silk and can be enjoyed neat, a splash of water, or over ice or used in cocktail and culinary recipes. Oso de Oro Red Vermouth handcrafted in California from a delectable blend of 19 botanicals, garnished with a generous orange peel, and served on the rocks, it will serve you well and may well become a favorite.

Method for the Cocktail: In a mixing glass, add ingredients, stir and pour into an ice filled rocks glass. Garnish with an orange peel.

Bundle up baby its cold outside and Luxury Experience - Hot Choco-Coco-Loco is a perfect "warm up" drink or to serve in place of dessert. Made with unsweetened coconut milk, sipping chocolate, Sierra Norte Single Barrel Whiskey, and garnished with a generous amount of "spirited" whipped cream, and served in a melted chocolate and coconut rimmed glass, this is one decadent hot chocolate!

Method for the Cocktail: Melt a small amount of chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave. Dip the rim of the whiskey glass in the chocolate, and then in the coconut flakes. Set aside.

Whip the heavy cream with Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey and the sugar. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Heat the unsweetened coconut milk in a saucepan over medium heat, add the sipping chocolate and stir until smooth and hot. Remove from the heat. Pour into an Irish Whiskey glass, top with the whiskey, generously garnish with whipped cream and top with chocolate sprinkles.

Luxury Experience - Spirited Persimmon Butter with Toasted Almonds served with Queso Fresco and Arugula. 

Serves 4 as a first course or as a cheese course 

Entertaining is easy with Luxury Experience - Spirited Persimmon Butter. Serve the rich and flavorful fruit butter alongside Queso Fresco (a Mexican fresh cheese) and arugula drizzled with olive and freshly ground black pepper as a lovely starter or cheese course.

Spirited Persimmon Butter Ingredients

Queso Fresco (Tropical Brand, Authentic Mexican-Style Fresh Cheese), cut into 12 wedges

Method: To a medium saucepan, add the persimmons, sugar, Himalayan salt, stir to combine, cover, and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes. Remove from stove, add mixture to a blender and puree until smooth.

Return pureed mixture to the saucepan and continue to cook overlow heat to reduce and thicken, about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add 1-ounce of the Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey and cook for an additional 10 minutes. Add the sliced almonds and combine. Remove from the stove. Place persimmon butter in a glass jar, let cool, then refrigerate until ready to serve.

Presentation: Toss arugula with olive oil and freshly ground black pepper. Place the arugula to one side of each of the 4 plates, add three wedges of the Queso Fresco in the middle of each plate, and alarge dollop of the persimmon butter to the right side of the plate.  

We entertain a lot and are always looking for easy hors d'oeuvres to serve with pre-dinner cocktails. Luxury Experience - Spirted Dates are very tasty, easy to make, and can be made 1-day ahead. Cocktail hour was never so simple.

Cinnamon powder for garnish

Method: Place dates in a microwaveable bowl, top with 1-ounce orange juice. Steam for 30 seconds to soften dates. Remove from bowl, place on a kitchen towel and pat dry. 

In a small food processor, blend the cream cheese, whiskey, orange zest, orange juice, agave nectar, and bitters until smooth. Pipe (or neatly spoon) the cream cheese mixture into the dates. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Lightly dust with cinnamon powder.

Butternut squash gets star treatment in our recipe for Luxury Experience - Roasted Butternut Squash Soup Kissed with Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey. The soup has a rich creaminess (without any cream) that is finished with drizzled Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey for a decadently elegant starter.  

Roasted Butternut Squash Soup Ingredients

Butternut Squash, peeled and cubed

Sierra Norte Single Barrel Mexican Whiskey per each 4-ounce serving

 

 

Sour Cream and Rosemary for garnishes

Method: Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (232 degrees C). Line a roasting pan with aluminum foil and top with parchment paper. Toss peeled and cubed butternut and garlic cloves with olive oil, kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, and fresh rosemary needles. Cover with aluminum foil and roast until squash is tender.  

Scrape butternut squash and other cooked ingredients into a blender and blend. Add the chicken stock and blend until smooth. Add additional stock to reach desired consistency. Return to sauce pan and warm thoroughly. Note: May be made 1-day ahead.  

Presentation: Pour hot soup into serving bowls, top with a dollop of sour cream and a sprig of rosemary. Drizzle one-quarter ofan ounce on each soup.
