Native New Yorker Luba Mason is a New York success story, she is a highly acclaimed singer and actress, whose impressive work on Broadway earned her a nomination for the Lucille Lortel award. She is an accomplished and engaging performer whether singing in an intimate Jazz club or acting on stage who easily makes the all-important connection with audiences. Having had the pleasure of seeing Luba perform live singing with her husband, the multi-talented Ruben Blades, as well as reviewing past releases, she is a dynamo of a performer. An acclaimed singer, musician (she plays piano and learned to play drums for an upcoming role on Broadway), and actress, Luba Mason is what the industry calls a "triple threat" yet she is also endearing and has that magic star quality to engage audiences.

She recorded her fourth solo album, Luba Mason – Triangle, live at the historic Power Station at Berklee NYC, and the audience’s reaction is pure electric. Luba Mason appreciates all genres of music, which she proves on this release, which hits the streets on October 23, 2020.

The 10-track release opens with the catchy song, Bach, Stevie Wonder & Janelle Monae, where the meaning of the song is that when you have music in your life you are never alone. We each have our own soundtracks in our heads that are the backdrop to our lives; for Luba, that could be Bach, Stevie Wonder, or Janelle Monae.

Next up is the song Haled’s Song About Love from the musical The Band’s Visit, followed by The Beatles song, Ticket To Ride off their 1965 album Help! This song is particularly interesting as Luba gives it a Jazz flavor and the added vibraphone makes it different in an exceptionally good way.

The release continues with the Antonio Carlos "Tom" Jobim 1972 Bossa Nova song Waters Of March, which Luba beautifully sings in English and in Portuguese. Luba pays homage to her Slovakian ancestry with the Slovak folk song, Ceresne (Cherries), sung in Slovak, this song is heartfully rendered. The release segues into the Thelonious Monk 1947 song, In Walked Bud, which once again, Joe Locke’s vibraphone sets this song apart as a winner.

Luba takes the listener back to 1944 with the song, Inolvidable (Unforgettable), written by Julio Gutiérrez, where her stunning vocals and linguistic ability make this song another album highlight. Not one to shy away from mixing genres, Luba segues into a System of the Down song, Toxicity then follows it up with the 1940 Jazz standard, Say It, written by Frank Loesser and Jimmy McHugh. The release closes with Paul Simon’s 1975 hit song, 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, where Samuel Torres layers in percussion for a stunning finale.

Once again, Luba Mason has clearly defined her own way on this release, deftly mixing genres and making it "Luba" and completely fabulous.

Until next time, keep enjoying the music!
