Dave Koz notes, "If you had asked me twenty years ago, I would never in a million years believed that we’d be doing Christmas tours two decades later. But here we are, still doing it, and it’s going as strong as ever! So, with twenty years under our belts, it seemed like a great reason to celebrate, and that’s why we decided to include the original cast of our Christmas tour. It’s our chance to go back to the very beginning and celebrate the relationships that this whole journey was built on."
As I had the pleasure of attending the performances Dave Koz and Friends Christmas Tour 2014, and A Peter White Christmas featuring Peter White,Rick Braun, and Euge Groove in 2016, I knew that Dave’s 20th Anniversary Christmas release, was going to be fabulous because when it comes to holiday music, Dave Koz and his friends sure know how to party.
Every year Dave Koz’s adds new friends to his Christmas Tours and his Christmas albums, and for Dave’s 2017 release, Dave Koz and Friends – David Benoit, Rick Braun, Peter White – 20th Anniversary Christmas, he gathered friends who were in his first Christmas tour- David Benoit, Rick Braun, and Peter White.
The 11-tracks of Christmas holiday joy opens with lovely instrumental versions of Winter Wonderland, Joy to the Wonderful World, and Christmas Time is Here. Continuing, Gabriel Orengo does justice to the José Feliciano song, Feliz Navidad, then Dave Koz, David Benoit, Rick Braun and Peter White mix it up just right on Hark! The Herald Angels We Have Heard on High (Medley).
Selina Albright adds her stunning voice to the 1944 Hugh Martin and Ralph Blaine song, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Dave Koz and friends segue into the classic German Christmas song O Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree), written in 1824, which has a wonderful horn opening and is all jazzed up for the holiday with David Benoit working his magic on the piano.
Javier Colon adds his beautiful voice to another old-time holiday favorite, Silent Night, written in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr and makes it spectacular. Next in the playlist is Hallelujah featuring Kenny Lattimore’s amazing voice complemented by background singers.
O Little Town of Bethlehem starts off traditionally and then kicks into full-blown jazz with Rick Braun’s trumpets and Dave Koz’s saxophones. The release closes with The Home Medley (I’ll Be Home for Christmas / Celebrate Me Home), which is a gorgeous blend of instrumentals and Jeffrey Osborne’s vocals complemented by background vocalists, and if this album does not get you iin to the Christmas holiday mood just hit the replay button until you do.
