David Benoit 2 in Love Featuring Jane Monheit was produced by David Benoit on the Concord Music Group label.

David Benoit writes in the liner notes: "When Glen Barros asked me to come up with something new, the first thing that came to mind was an all-vocal album. After all, I’ve released over 30 instrumental records over the years so it was time to go in a slightly different direction. But for me, this was familiar territory. I had spent my formative years as a pianist, accompanist and music director for Lainie Kazan, Connie Stevens, Diane Schuur and other notable vocalists. I’ve always loved vocal music and many of my Heroes are great songwriters like Burt Bacharach, Henry Mancini, Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein.

But rather than cover the great American songbook, which in my opinion has been overplayed, I decided to write all new original songs. But like many other esteemed composers, I do not write lyrics, although I have attempted that feat many times and failed miserably. So I called two very dear friends that I’ve practically grown up with in the music business, Lorraine Feather and Mark Winkler, two of the finest lyricists of our time. I had also formed a new friendship with a highly gifted singer-songwriter named Spencer Day.

But who on earth could possibly sing all these songs that were in odd keys, rangy and all over the place stylistically? Enter Jane Monheit…"

The release opens with Barcelona Nights, a gorgeous piece that David co-wrote with lyricist Lorraine Feather, which has a sexy Latin rhythm complemented by Jane’s sultry vocals and David’s piano-work, inspired by David’s trip to Spain with his wife.

Next in the line-up is This Dance, which David co-wrote with Mark Winkler, a slow and romantic ballad, followed by Too In Love, another Benoit/Feather tune, and one of my favorites on the album with great rhythms complemented the talented musicianship of Pat Kelly on acoustic and electric guitar, David Hughes on upright and electric bass, Jamey Tate on drums, and Lauren Kosty on percussion.

The Benoit/Winkler Dragonfly is a short little piece featuring David Benoit on piano, Jane Monheit on vocals, John Clayton on bass, Clayton Cameron on drums, Michelle Suh on violin, Cathy Biagini on cello, and Darryl Tanikawa on contractor.

David teamed up with Spencer Day to write, Love Will Light The Way, which shines brightly from start to finish with David’s beautiful piano intro, Jane’s vocals, Pat Kelly on acoustic and electric guitar, David Hughes on upright and electric bass, Jamey Tate on drums, and Lauren Kosty on percussion.

The release continues with the stunning David Benoit instrumental piece, Love in Hyde Park, with David on piano, David Hughes on acoustic bass, Jamey Tate on drums, and Tim Weisberg playing alto flute and c flute. The Benoit/Winkler collaboration, The Songs We Sang, features David on piano, Jane’s vocals, John Clayton, Clayton Cameron, Michelle Suh, Cathy Biagini, and Darryl Tanikawa.

Other songs on the release are Fly Away (Benoit/Day) and Something’s Gotta Give (Benoit/Winkler), and Love Theme From Candide (Leonard Bernstein) /Send In The Clowns (Stephen Sondheim) which David dedicated to the memory of Betty June Benoit (1929-1997).

He writes, "I hope you will enjoy this collection of brand new love songs, including a remake of an instrumental piece of mine and a loving tribute to my Mom, who could never get enough of "Candide."
