The Mountaintop - Music Theatre of CT
The 2022 season at the Music Theatre of Connecticut in Norwalk, Connecticut was off to a great start with the play, The Mountaintop about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Starring Chaz Rose as the dynamic Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Shavonna Banks as Camae, the duo fully do justice to the powerful play written by Katori Hall and directed by Gayle Samuels. The play runs until February 20, 2022.

The Mountaintop - Music Theatre of Connecticut

We had the pleasure of attending The Mountaintop on opening night, Saturday, February 5, 2022. The play synopsis states that it is, "a gripping reimagination of events the night before the assassination of the civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On April 3, 1968, after delivering one of his most memorable speeches, an exhausted Dr. King retires to his room at the Lorraine Motel while a storm rages outside. When a mysterious stranger arrives with some surprising news, King is forced to confront his destiny and his legacy to his people."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American Baptist Minister and Civil Rights Activist. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929, and assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968, at the age of thirty-nine, leaving behind his wife, Coretta Scott King, and four children, Martin Luther King III, Yolanda King, Dexter King, and Bernice King, who was only five years old when her father was assassinated. 1968 was a time of great unrest and violence, the Vietnam war raged on, there were student protests around the world, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in April and Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated a few months later, on June 6, 1968.

The play takes an imagined look at the last hours of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life as he reflects on what he has accomplished and what he feels he still has left to do. Chaz Rose is brilliant in his powerful and enthralling portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Shavonna Banks brings sass and spirit to her role as the mysterious Camae. Director Gayle Samuels elicits the best from her cast and delivers Katori Hall's play with a tremendously powerful impact. Bravo! The Mountain Top runs until February 20, 2022, and is a "must-see" play.
