It was an inspired evening of Brazilian music at Jazz Standard in New York City with Vinicius Cantuária’s exciting performance of songs by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim & João Gilberto. Together with his band, Helio Alves on piano, Paul Sokolow on bass, Adriano Santos on drums, and Marivaldo dos Santos on percussion, Vinicius Cantuária demonstrated the popularity and longevity of their music, as he is clearly a contemporary master of bossa nova, samba, and Latin jazz.
Vinicius Cantuária
We had the pleasure of seeing Vinicius Cantuária perform with his band at Jazz Standard on Friday, November 15, 2019, as part of their 4-night engagement there. Brazilian music is always a draw in New York, and with the combination of music created by the legendary Brazilian bossa nova masters, Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto, expertly performed by Vinicuius Cantuária, it was a magical evening of music.
We caught the first set where a few of the many highlights of the evening included the songs, Só danço samba, which had us (and several other members of the appreciative audience) dancing in our chairs, Desafinado, Corcovado, Felicidade and many more. A guitar master, Vinicius Cantuária was a joy to watch, and his voice was a perfect complement to the music.
Vinicius Cantuária
No stranger to this music, Brazilian singer, songwriter, arranger, and guitarist, Vinicius Cantuária was born in the city of Manaus in1951 and raised in Rio de Janeiro during the beginning of the bossa nova movement made famous by Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto.
In 2015, Cantuária released an homage album to Jobim, entitled Vinicius canta Antonio Carlos Jobim (Vinicius sings Antonio Carlos Jobim) on the Sunnyside records label, which included Ligia, Caminhos cruzados, Vivo sonhando, Só dançosamba, Garota de Ipanema, Felicidade, Por causa de você, Este seu olhar, Vocêvai ver and many more.
Vinicius Cantuária and Marivaldo dos Santos
For his Jazz Standard performance, Vinicius Cantuária Sings Jobim & João, he honored both legends. Antonio Carlos Jobim (also known as Tom Jobin) was a Brazilian composer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and singer, born in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, and died in New York City in 1994. He was affectionately called the "father of bossa nova" and many of his songs have become jazz standards. One of his most famous songs is the Garota de Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema). João Gilberto was a Brazilian singer, songwriter, guitarist born in the state of Bahia in 1931 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 2019. Like Jobim, he too was a strong contributor and pioneer to the bossa nova movement. Together they were Brazilian masters of bossa nova, samba, and Latin jazz. A few of Gilberto’s most famous songs include Desafinado, Chega de Saudade, Corcovado, Bim Bom, O Pato, and many more.
