The Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, Connecticut has been enchanting patrons with the high caliber of its performances since opening in December 2000. Throughout the years we have been fortunate to experience sensational performances there by such major talents as Jane Monheit, Annie Haslam, Blues Travelers, Beth Hart, Rachel Sage, Colbie Caillat, and many others. On Thursday, April 4, 2024, we had the pleasure of experiencing another night of exceptional music by the GRAMMY® award-winning contemporary jazz ensemble säje as part of their Spring 2024 Tour.

Akie Bermiss Trio

On Thursday, April 4, 2024, we returned to the Ridgefield Playhouse for an exciting evening of contemporary jazz presented by Moffly Media as part of their Art, Wine & Jazz Series powered by BMW of Ridgefield. The Akie Bermiss Trio was the opening act before the highly anticipated performance by säje.

While their name säje (it rhymes with the word “beige”) sounds Scandinavian, the ensemble’s name was created by using the first initial of each of the four extremely talented members comprised of Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage. As multi-talented composers, arrangers, and vocalists, collectively säje brings much to the musical table with their innovative, experimental, and exciting approach to contemporary jazz.

Their 2024 tour was to promote their self-titled debut album, säje, released in August 2023, which includes the song “In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning” that won them the group’s first GRAMMY® for “Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals” (featuring Jacob Collier.)

Over the course of the evening’s performance, the audience had the pleasure of getting to know Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage, as they performed several cuts off their säje album including the songs, Evergreen, (You Are) the Oracle, Never You Mind, Britches, and Wisteria, followed by a few memorable covers done by other iconic female singers including Dolly Parton’s Jolene.

Highly acclaimed and acknowledged artists on their own, individually their voices were exceptional when singing solo, and when singing together as a group, their voices were spectacular with gorgeously rich harmonies. Backed by Dawn Clement on piano, Michael Glynn on bass, and Christian Euman on drums, säje is a supergroup that shines.

Once again, the Ridgefield Playhouse brought amazing talent to their intimate space for an evening of innovative contemporary jazz with säje. Bravo!
