Frédérick Gravel& Brianna Lombardo
Frédérick Gravel is a dancer, choreographer, musician, lighting designer, and Artistic Director for the Daniel Léveillé Danse, and has gained national and international recognition as "one to watch." This was our third time seeing Frédérick Gravel perform at The Quick; the first time was in 2017 during The Quick’s "Upside Down Inside Out Season Gala" where he created and performed in Tout se pète la guile, chérie (All Hell is Breaking Loose, Honey) with Nicolas Cantin, Dany Desjardins, and Tomas Fuey. We were immediately mesmerized by his avant-garde and brilliantly dynamic approach to contemporary dance.
The second time we had the pleasure of seeing him perform, was at The Quick in 2019, when he performed his solo work, Fear and Greed, and again, we were impressed with his style, creativity, and ability to captivate and command an audience’s attention for 75-minutes. Performing solo as a dancer, musician, and singer, with the audience seated onstage for an up-close, personal, and more intimate performance, can be a daunting task, yet Frédérick demonstrated that he was more than capable to connect with the audience physically and emotionally.
We had the pleasure of returning to The Quick to see Frédérick Gravel for a third time, for the US Premiere of This Duet That We’ve Already Done (so many times), on Friday, April 8, 2022, part of his three-night engagement (April 7 – 9, 2022). Always pushing the envelope and blurring boundaries as a choreographer and dancer, Frédérick Gravel, is forever changing and imprinting the world of contemporary dance with his drive, physicality, and creativity, that in turn pushes the audience to join him in a meeting of the minds through his compositions.
For his 2022 performance Frédérick Gravel, paired with Brianna Lombardo, an equally powerful dancer, together created a dynamic presence and on-stage chemistry that exploded as they explored the multi-faceted stages of love.
For this composition, the audience was once again seated on-stage for this intimate look as Frédérick and Brianna explored the many nuances of love, from initial shyness and playfulness, to the sensuousness, and then gradually moving from gentle caring to often rough coupling, baring the souls of the dancers, and leaving the audience as spent as the dancers at the conclusion of the exhilarating work.
After the performance, there was a champagne reception to toast the dancers, hosted by The Quebec Government Offices in Boston and New York, and the Quick Center for the Arts, where the patrons had the opportunity to meet Frédérick and Brianna. Speaking with Frédérick we learned that this composition, This Duet That We’ve Already Done (so many times), was once a small piece of a larger composition, and that he expanded it to be a full-length stand-alone composition. He recently spent time in Europe composing pieces for European companies, and his next project will be to work on some new compositions for the Daniel Léveillé Danse. We cannot wait to see what Frédérick will create next. If you have the opportunity to see him perform do so, as he is clearly a dancer/choreographer that must be seen to be appreciated. Bravo!
The Quick Center for the Arts always has something wonderful happening with lectures, art receptions, opera, concerts, dance, plays, and so much more, so be sure to visit their website for upcoming events.
