Multi-Grammy® winner Brazilian Jazz composer, pianist, vocalist, Eliane Elias is always electrifying to watch perform, and her performance on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Sony Hall in New York City held the audience spellbound as she played cuts off her previous albums as well as her newest album time and again, released on the Candid Records label, which hits the streets on June 28, 2024.
On Friday, June 14, 2024, we had the pleasure of experiencing the Blue Note Jazz Festival presenting Eliane Elias at Sony Hall in New York. It was the third time we had seen her in concert, the first time at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York in November 2017, and the second time at the Iridium in New York City in October 2022. With each performance, we fall a little bit more in love with her stunning compositions, arrangements, and vocals. Eliane Elias is an engaging, electrifying pianist that you expect to see sparks fly from her fingers as she plays such crisp arrangements that accentuate each sparkling piano note.
From her newest album, time and again that launches on June 28, 2024, on vinyl, CD, and streaming, she played the cut At First Sight, which she first wrote for an album in 1988 as an instrumental piece, then recently added lyrics. She segued into Falo do Amor (Speak of Love), sung in Portuguese. Eliane Elias also treated the appreciative audience to songs from her previous albums Quietude (released in 2022) and Mirror Mirror (released in 2021).
Part of her charm and charisma is that Eliane Elias engages her audiences with her stories interspersed with her music. When she spoke of the Bossa Nova movement and how it started in Rio de Janeiro, she created the visualization and took the audience to Brazil, where we felt we were in people’s apartments where they would drink caipirinhas, someone would play a guitar, and perhaps there would be some percussion, a spoon on a glass, brushes on a book or matchboxes on a table.
Setting the image in the audience’s minds, she segued into Você e Eu (You and Me) sung in Portuguese, from her Quietude album. She followed that with Eu Samba Mesmo (I Really Samba), and Bahia Medley – Saudades da Bahia/Voce Ja Foi A Bahia., and many other wonderful songs. Throughout the years, Eliane Elias has produced memorable music earning her multiple Grammys®, Latin Grammys®, and other accolades and awards, however the best award for any musician is the audience appreciation, which continues to soar with each of her releases and performances.
To close the performance, Eliane Elias played the Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes classic song, Garota de Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema).
