Chris and Oliver Wood are brothers, and their backstory is interesting; while both pursued musical careers, they did not join forces musically until 2001, and Jano Rix joined the band in 2011. Chris and Oliver grew up in Colorado, and Chris went on to study jazz at the New England Conservatory of Music, so their musical background goes deep and is genre multidirectional. Playing together for many years has tightened their sound, and the album is flawless with well-executed instrumentals and excellent harmonies throughout.
Heart Is The Hero is a 10-track album that includes a booklet with storytelling lyrics for listeners to fully appreciate each of the themes and nuances of the songs, and if you feel like it, to sing along. The album opens with the song, Pilgrim, which is high-octane, out-of-box fabulous with its blazing keyboards intro.
The title track Heart Is The Hero is in the number two spot on the album with Jano Rix laying down some great keyboards on this one with Chris Wood layering in the harmonica. The band brings on the funk on Worst Pain of All, then segues into Far From Alone. The lyrics are fabulous "…You may be lonesome, But you’re so far from alone…"
The band slows the pace on the track, Between The Beats, with easy guitar picking to complement the lyrics. Next on the playlist is Line Those Pockets about no matter where you are in life, we are all the same, and to "…line those pockets with grace…" Mean Man World is about bringing up a daughter in a changing world.
Rollin’ On has a stunning instrumental intro before sliding into the lyrics. There are great harmonies on this one that will have you singing along. Coming into the home stretch of the album, the band once again slows the pace on the lament, Someone For Everyone, which opens with the lyrics "They say there’s someone for everyone, So what about me…" The release closes with the track, Kitchen Floor, about leaving a song behind for someone to sing long after we are gone, leaving the listener in a contemplative, reflective mood.
Until next time, keep enjoying the music!
