The latest release from Mud Morganfield – Deep Mud is a class in how Chicago Blues should be performed. Mud comes from a long heritage of Chicago Blues via his legendary father, Muddy Waters, but it took Mud time for him to “get my blues,” and show off his magnificent vocals along with his stunning writing skills. Written from his heart as his life changed with the passing of his biggest supporter from day one, his mother. If you want to not only hear, but truly feel, Chicago Blues at their best, you have to give Deep Mud a listen.

Mud Morganfield – Deep Mud was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Brian Leach and Studebaker John, produced and arranged by Studebaker John, and released on the Nola Blue Records label. Deep Mud contains 12 original tracks from Mud Morganfield and 2 covers from Muddy Waters, Mud’s father, for an amazing Chicago Blues release. This marks Mud’s first release on the Nola Blue Records label and was celebrated by the record label as they noted, “Drawing from a great reservoir of paternal music heritage combined with a lifetime of maternal nursing.”
The release opens with the track, Bring Me My Whiskey, a pure Chicago Blues song with a tight band, ringing harmonica and a punchy song featuring Mud’s soulful vocals. Mud has a way with lyrics, “Bring me my whiskey and set my woman by my side,….she’s a real girlfriend, she’s kind of high on the maintenance side…” The release moves up tempo with the track, Big Frame Woman, as Mud sings, “…I want a big frame woman….she’ll help me end this fight,….I could love her morning, noon, and night…,” a fun track featuring great finger work on guitar and piano.
The first of the two Muddy Waters covers, Strange Woman, rolls in and Mud’s vocals hold true to the Chicago Blues sound made famous by Muddy Waters. Close your eyes and you are transported back to 1971 when the track, Strange Woman, was released on the Muddy Waters live album, Live at Mr. Kelly’s.
The track, Don’t Leave Me, is a song about love, mistakes, and trying to make up, “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to put you up on the shelf, ….now if you walk out that door, you can’t come back no more….”
The release segues to the track, She’s Getting Her Groove On, with great finger work on the organ coupled with the horn section has this track “rocking.” The track, Ernestine, is a deep moving song with compelling harmonica and a pulsating baseline that pulls you into the song. “Ernestine, Ernestine, I love the way you walk…..I’ll go anywhere, anywhere you want me to,…I can see you are high class…”
Chicago Blues is definitely alive and well with Mud Morganfield as he demonstrated though the tracks Strike Like Lightning, Cosigner Man, Lover Man, and In and Out of My Life, which all feature that distinct electronic Blues component intermingling powerful harmonica, organ, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums for a more complex sound (Chicago Blues). Tracks, The Man That You’re With and Carolina, are touching and poignant as Mud shows his acumen with lyrics that are compelling and capture your attention.
The release closes with the tracks, Country Boy, a 1952 Muddy Waters song that Mud covers to perfection as the band sharpens their Chicago Blues roots, and the closing track, A Dream Walking, that opens with a haunting organ solo before the beautiful vocals that only Mud could project as he sings, “If my father was a rolling stone, then my Mother must have been so strong, …..Have you ever seen a dream walking, have you ever heard an angel sing,….If I only had one wish, one wish, to see my mother in my dreams…”
