If you are a novice, aspiring, or experienced bread maker then 30 Breads To Bake Before You Die by Allyson Reedy is an excellent addition to your cookbook library. I am known in the family as Boulanger Edward, as I am an aspiring bread maker who loves to play with different recipes. So, when I received 30 Breads to Bake Before You Die, with recipes from renowned Chefs such as Dominique Ansel, Duff Goldman from the Food Network, and Deb Perelman, I was excited to get started, but considering the name of the cookbook, I was not in a hurry to bake my way through it.

The cookbook could double as a coffee table book as the photos are outstanding. But that being said, the recipes are what I was interested in.  The book has a recipe that can be made in 30-minutes (Cheesy Naan) versus those that may take a few days to make.

The cookbook leads with an easy to follow,  easy to do, and enticing section, “The Easiest Way to Create A Sourdough Starter (and keep it alive!). The 2-page write-up was straightforward, and the best part is that it explains on how to “keep it alive” as not everyone is baking sourdough bread weekly, okay not most people.

The chapters are divided into, “Loaves,” Small Carbs,” “Flats,” and “Sweet,” so there is something for everyone, and more so if you are interested in expanding beyond your comfort and taste zone to tackle a more complex recipe. The wonderful thing about the home baker is that not everything has to turn out “picture perfect,” but it will probably taste amazing.

Debra and I are pizza lovers so I had to try the “Pizza Crust” recipe by Claire Czarnecki of Pizzeria Alberico in Boulder, Colorado.  The recipe spans 2-days, but don’t be worried, the day-1 preparation time of 3+ hours encompasses 2.5+ hours of dough resting time and 15-20 minutes of working the dough. Thus, great down time to think about toppings and to do some wine tasting to pair with your pizzas on day-2. The “Pizza Crust” recipe is now my go to dough recipe as it turned out fantastic!

So, introduce yourself to new recipes, get some flour in your hair, get your hands into it, and acquire a copy of 30 Breads To Bake Before You Die by Allyson Reedy.
