Greenwich Concours d ‘Elegance, Greenwich, CT, USA – The Cars that Dreams are Made Of

The Greenwich Concours d’Elegance 2022, held in Roger Sherman Baldwin Park in Greenwich, Connecticut, provided the fuel for dreams of the automotive kind. The three-day festival held from June 3 – 5, 2022, presented car collectors and car afficionados with the opportunity to see rare, classic, and unusual motorcars and motorcycles. As always, we loved the festival, especially speaking with the owners and learning the stories behind their vehicles.

We attended the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance on Saturday, June 4, and Sunday, June 5, 2022, to maximize the show experience. On Saturday, there were three interesting seminars we attended hosted by industry specialists, as well as RADWOOD featuring cars from the 1980s and 1990s, and a special category of Concours d ‘Lemons, for cars with unusual pedigrees.

RADWOOD Cars

Two of the interesting RADWOOD cars on display included a 1981 DMC DeLorean owned by Dalmau Garcia, who dressed as "Doc Brown" from the film "Back to the Future," and a fire engine red 1995 Saab 9000 Aero owned by Mark Skinner. What made the 1981 DMC DeLorean (DeLorean Motor Company), produced in Ireland, so interesting was that it was only produced from 1981-1982, with model years ranging from 1981-1983. Its brushed stainless-steel body and gull-wing doors still hold the power to enchant aficionados.

2022 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance Grand Marshal

On Saturday, we had the opportunity to sit down with 2022 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance Grand Marshal Judy Stropus, who graciously took time to speak with us. Judy is an amazing person to get to know, she has authored many books on racing, is an award-winning racing industry expert who has and continues to race, is a concours judge and race scorer, and owns a PR company dedicated to racing. Over the years she has honed her career and has made her mark in a male dominated sport. Born in Lithuania, Judy moved the United States as a young child, and has been passionately driven throughout her life. Her racing career has earned her many awards including membership in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

Her advice to young people who want to enter the world of racing, is that if that is what you want then go for it. If you have commitment and ambition, you will make it, however you need to go out and get it. You need passion, and of course skill, but with hard work and passion, it is possible to succeed.

In addition to the exemplary beauty of the motorcars on display, for us, it is the stories behind them that always pique our interest. The 1926 Rolls Royce Phantom I Barker Coupe DeVille presented by George Dragone, was definitely a motorcar with an interesting story to tell. Built for Edward Guinie of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, one of the wealthiest men in Brazil in the 1920s, this distinguished motorcar was a successor of the legendary Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. It is one of the earliest Phantom I’s built and one of the most expensive. At the time it was built, the cost was almost $20,000. The price in today’s market is $250,000. It has a 150-inch wheelbase, special wood trim, cut glass, opera carriage lights, and a liquor cabinet, to name but a few of its many attributes. It also piqued the Judges’ interest, as the motorcar received an Award of Speed and Style in the Pre-War Classics: European category.
