The tandem is calling
The Homestead Madison has thoughtful and interesting amenities that include complimentary use of their bicycles as well as a tandem bicycle for guests to use during their stay, and while we own and ride mountain bikes, we had never attempted to ride a tandem bike before and thought it was high time to rectify that. Although a rarity on the roads these days, tandem bicycles have been around since 1898. Whenever we would chance upon seeing one, they always intrigued us into wanting to try riding one someday.
As we know how to ride single bicycles, we thought how different could riding a tandem bicycle be! We were in for a surprise! Throughout the years we have done many tandem sports including tandem rappelling, and thus we are normally good at "sharing" and working together. Trying to ride a tandem bicycle though was a completely unique experience for us!
When we decided to experience the tandem bicycle, we first had to establish which of us would take the lead seat, and which of us would sit behind. As (Edward) is a much better, bigger, and stronger rider, we decided that he should take the lead seat, with (Debra) sitting behind. With our helmets securely fashioned, we hopped on and were ready to begin our adventure. We looked good, now all we needed to do was to get the bicycle in motion.
Entrance to The Homestead Madison
The Homestead Madison has a gorgeous, long, sloping, pebble drive that leads from the road up to the beautiful white colonial complete with black shutters where red Adirondack chairs beckon invitingly on the front lawn. While gorgeous to look at, the angle of the incline of the driveway from the Inn down to the road, and (Debra’s) fear of falling onto the pebbles with bare legs, caused us to rethink our practice course.
Tandem practice run on grass
We wisely decided to practice riding tandem on the sweeping, lush, green lawn, before tackling riding on the pebble drive and ultimately riding on the road. Getting the bicycle in motion proved to be a bit of a task, as (Edward) needed to start pumping the pedals while (Debra) simply hung on until it was safe to join in pedaling, however always ones to persevere, we eventually did get the hang of riding tandem around the property.
Back to conventional bicycle
Although we were comfortable riding on the grass, we were still a bit wobbly when we hit the road, and after trying to navigate the winding curves and the slight hills of the road, we wisely decided to exchange the bicycle built for two, for two bicycles built for one, so that we could safely go off and explore the beauty of Madison, Connecticut by bicycle.
Let’s GO!
As we have yet to fully master the art of riding a tandem bicycle, we look forward to giving it another go and trying it again at another time. Whatever method you opt to explore Madison, Connecticut, whether it be by bicycle, by tandem bicycle, by foot, or by car, there is so much to do and see in every season, that you will want to add another day or two to your stay to fully appreciate all that Madison has to offer.
