Greenwich Polo East Coast Silver Cup - photo by Luxury Experience

If you are looking for something fun to do on a Sunday afternoon in the Summer, you might like to consider attending a polo match in Greenwich, Connecticut at the Greenwich Polo Club. Polo is an exciting, fast-paced game where the polo “ponies” and their players work in tandem to show their skill and dexterity, while attendees sip cocktails, enjoy light bites, and stimulating conversation. On Sunday, June 22, 2025, we attended our first polo match of the season, the East Coast Silver Cup that featured One&Only Resorts vs Round Hill for an exciting, high-speed match in beautiful Backcountry Greenwich. We are looking forward to attending more matches this Summer.

The Polo Match

Let the match begin!

A polo match consists of 6 chukkers of 7.5 minutes each, with an intermission between the third and fourth chukkers, however the speed of the play on the field measuring 300 yards by 160 yards, the professionalism and horsemanship of the players, and the agility of their horses, is what makes polo so exciting. It is always exciting, exhilarating, and definitely fun to watch!

The teams are rated by the players’ rank. As One&Only Resorts had a rating of 15 (14) goals and Round Hill had a rating of 16 goals, the match started by giving a handicap of 2 goals to One&Only Resorts to even the playing field, with the scoreboard showing Round Hill: 0, One&Only Resorts: 2.

Chukker 1: Chukker 1 was off to a great start when Keshvarzien scored a quick goal 1:38 minutes into the match for One&Only Resorts. Panelo went on to score a goal for Round Hill. Polo is a game where the horses (called “ponies”) are an integral and important part of the game. To protect the health and safety of the horse and the rider, and this being a hot and humid day, players will swap out their horses throughout the match. Players swapped out their horses at 3:08 minutes remaining in the chukker. Renewed and refreshed, Colombres scored a goal for One&Only Resorts with just over 2 minutes remaining. Panelo scored a goal for Round Hill with an assist from Lipman to close out Chukker 1 with a score of One&Only Resorts 4, Round Hill 2.

Chukker 2: There was fast action on the field as Liavallol scored a goal for Round Hill a little over one minute into Chukker 2, narrowing the margin 3-4. Del Rio drove the ball 295 yards to score another goal for Round Hill, tying the score, 4-4. Liavallol went on to score another goal for Round Hill giving them a brief lead of 5-4 over One&Only Resorts, until Olivera, Jr. scored a goal, closing out Chukker 2 with a score of 5-5.

Chukker 3: Round Hill action was hot on the field as Panelo scored another goal, followed by another goal by Liavallol, giving them a lead of 7-5. There was another horse swap with 3 minutes remaining in the chukker. Panelo scored again to close out Chukker 3, Round Hill 8, One& Only Resorts 5.

The Traditional Stomping of the Divots

Between Chukkers 3 and 4, attendees took to the playing field for the traditional Stomping of the Divots, patting the grass back where the horses’ hooves had torn it up. It also provided the perfect photo op, stretch one’s legs, get a cocktail or wine from the Cup Bearer Bar, or something to eat from the many food trucks.

Chukker 4: Chukker 4 was a volley of goals as Del Rio was on the move and scored a quick goal for Round Hill, bringing the score to 9-5 in their favor. Keshvarzien scored again for One&Only Resorts, followed by a goal by Liavallol to close out Chukker 4 with a score of 10-6 in favor of Round Hill.

Chukker 5: Colombres was the player to watch as he scored 2 successive goals for One&Only Resorts closing the chukker with a score of 10-8.

Your Guide to Polo

Chukkers

The match is divided into 6 periods called Chukkers, which lasts 7.5 minutes each. After the 3rd chukker, there is the traditional stomping of the divots to replace the grass that the galloping horses’ hooves raise.

The Field

Polo is played on a field that is 300 yards by 160 yards (the size of 10 football fields.)

Polo Ponies

Although they are called polo ponies, they are full-grown horses. Each player typically brings 6-8 polo ponies (or more) to use in a match. Horses are swapped throughout the match to keep the horses and their riders fresh. The top speed of a polo pony is 35 mph, and the speed of a polo ball can reach 100 mph.

Interesting to note, if you look closely at our photos, you will notice that the horses have their manes cut closely, and their tails are braided. This is to prevent the players’ mallets from getting tangled in them during the match.

Player Positions

Position 1 is the attacking position.
Position 2 is the offensive position. Position 1 and 2 are the “forwards.”
Position 3 is the tactical leader (and usually the best player on the team).
Position 4 plays defense.

Handicaps

Players are given a handicap level from -2 to 10 goals depending on their ability, with -2 the lowest, and 10 goal the highest possible. A 10-goaler player is considered the best and there are less than 100 players who have achieved this ranking. Handicaps are evaluated throughout the year and the number assigned in goals is the player’s value to the team, not the number of goals expected from the player.

The rating of an “A” notes that the player holds Amateur status. A team’s handicap is calculated by adding the 4 players’ handicaps together.

Goals

There are 2 goal posts at each end of the field. When a team scores a goal, the teams switch direction of the play, this keeps the conditions even throughout the match.
