Magical, is the word that immediately comes to mind to describe our stay at Domaine de Cromey, a luxurious Manor House located in the Burgundy region in St. Sernin du Plain, France. Although only 1-hour and 17-minutes by high-speed TGV train from Paris Gare de Lyon station to Le Creusot-Montceau station, the Burgundy region is worlds away from bustling Paris, the capital of France. With its focus on gastronomy and wine, six sumptuous and luxuriously appointed guestrooms for a maximum of 12 guests, a gourmet chef, and professional and attentive service, the answer is yes, what is the question.
We stayed at Domaine de Cromey in late October into November of 2024, and were immediately impressed with all it had to offer. Located in the Burgundy region in St. Sernin du Plain, France, Domaine de Cromey is easily accessible by high-speed TGV train. We departed from Paris Gare de Lyon station to Le Creusot-Montceau station for the 1-hour and 17-minute ride where we were met at the station by the professional and welcoming Domaine de Cromey staff to drive us the 30-minutes to the Manor House in their luxury van.
We arrived at Domaine de Cromey in late afternoon, where the leaves of the surrounding vineyards glowed in Autumnal shades of orange, and the stone Manor House and outbuildings were bathed in a golden light. Grapevines trailed over the exterior, terracotta pots overflowed with gorgeous flowers and herbs, and lipstick red round metal tables flanked by red chairs added to the overall ambience and invited guests to sit a moment and enjoy its exquisite beauty.
Entering the main building, we were enchanted with its stunning ambience including its 18th century wine press. Owned by Eleanor Garvin and her husband Dennis Sherman, Domaine de Cromey has been lovingly restored and renovated to appeal to discerning clientele looking for a luxurious stay in the heart of Burgundy. Their focus since they arrived from the United States to France in 1983 has been on gastronomy and fine wines. Eleanor is a chef and the author of At Home in Burgundy: The Papillon Recipes, and Dennis is a wine educator, wine historian, and purveyor of fine wines at Elden Selections, found on the website: BurgundyWine.com, where the focus is on small-production, excellent wines.
With gracious hospitality as its calling card, we were warmly welcomed at Domaine de Cromey with a glass of Louis Picamelot, Crémant de Bourgogne, Les Terroirs, Brut, a single vineyard cuvee, accompanied by the ultimate Burgundian hors oeuvres, gougères, (small cheese puffs) served warm from the oven. (The recipe for Eleanor’s gougères is in Eleanor Garvin’s cookbook and is featured in Luxury Experience in the Luxury Gifts section.)
Each of the six guestrooms is unique, yet all are sumptuously and luxuriously appointed. In-room amenities include Spa robes, slippers, a hairdryer, towel warming racks, make-up/shaving mirrors, and a plethora of luxe toiletries. What you will not find in the guestrooms are televisions, as this is Burgundy and there is much to do, learn, and explore.
During our stay at Domaine de Cromey, Chef Joss Rober was the talent in the kitchen, and he tempted guests’ palates with his enticing and delectable cuisine at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Tables were always elegantly dressed, and the menus were interesting and diverse.
The dinner menu for our first night began with Cured Mackerel, pickled fennel, lemon humus, pain grille, and sauce gribiche, followed by Magret de Canard (duck), braised red cabbage, celeriac purée, white beans, and roasted potimarron (a type of squash). Burgundy is the home of excellent cheeses, and a selection of three cheeses followed accompanied by nuts and fresh raspberries. For dessert there was Tarte tatin Caramel beurre salé with mascarpone ice cream, and this was just day one!
Wines are an essential Burgundian accompaniment at meals, and the pairing wines for the dinner included: Domaine Oudin Chablis 2022, ($47 bottle), which had lovely mineral and floral notes, Domaine Oudin, Chablis 1er Cru ‘Vaucoupins’ 2022 ($79 bottle), ripe, fresh with a touch of salt, this wine was lively and powerful, with nice minerality; and Domaine Oudin, Chablis 1er Cru ‘Vaugiraut’ 2022 ($79 bottle), which offered ripe fruit with floral notes, and was powerful yet elegant. It was interesting to taste three outstanding selections side-by-side from the same Winemaker and notice how their exceptional style carried across the board. The wines were excellent and well paired for the gastronomic dinner, with expert wine knowledge provided as each of them were served.
After dinner we went outside to enjoy the exquisite beauty of the stars sparkling in the inky black sky and had the wonderful surprise of seeing Starlink making its way across the sky. Afterwards, we joined the other guests for a lively and enjoyable conversation in the attractive living room featuring a baby grand piano and contemporary paintings by the artist Declan Field and learned of the next day’s plan for adventure. It was an enchanting beginning to our stay at Domaine de Cromey.
We began our days with sumptuous breakfasts, we took dips in the heated pool, and spent enjoyable mornings, as well as afternoons, learning about the wines of Burgundy by tasting wines in the vineyards, tasting wines in Dennis’ Domaine de Cromey wine cellar and tasting room, visiting wineries and the nearby towns of Beaune (home to the important and prestigious wine auction, Hospices de Beaune, that takes place annually in November), Dijon, (home of the famous mustard), Autun, and others, where we soaked up the wine and gastronomy culture, as well as the interesting history of the region.
While our group had a wine and gastronomy focus, the staff at Domaine de Cromey can adjust the schedule to meet its guests’ preferences with advance planning and scheduling. If you like cycling, imagine what it would be like to ride a bicycle along the canals and the vineyards, or to experience Burgundy by air in a hot air balloon. History, gastronomy, and wines are but a small slice of what you can experience in Burgundy, and as much as we experienced during our stay, we would love to return to Domaine de Cromey and experience more of this exciting region.
