Welcome to the Stamford Museum & Nature Center
We visited the Stamford Museum & Nature Center on Sunday, March 5, 2023, when the weather was mild, bright, and sunny, making it the perfect opportunity to explore all that they offer from their hiking trails to their farm exhibits, and their world-class museum. We were not alone in our quest for a day of fun in the sun, as the Stamford Museum & Nature Center always attracts visitors of all ages due to its rich diversity of special events and programs.
Getting to know the animals
As confirmed animal lovers, we began our visit by visiting their 10-acre Heckscher Farm where we had the opportunity to make friends with many of their friendly farm residents, such as goats, alpacas, and llamas. We also enjoyed watching Derrick, a very sweet 10-year-old male Guinea Hog, work with his caregiver and demonstrate how to bow, how to fetch a ball, and even how to turn in a circle on her signal. Interesting to note about this Heritage Breed, is that it is a small, black breed of swine that is unique to the United States and was once the most numerous pig breed; today there are fewer than 200.

Sicilian Miniature Donkey
Another sweet animal that we encountered on our walk was their Sicilian Miniature Donkey who was strolling around the grounds with his caregivers’ delighting visitors.
Heckscher WILD reptile
After our animal encounters at the Heckscher Farm and Heckscher WILD where we saw tortoises, reptiles, ferrets, and birds, we visited the Bendel Museum where they always have wonderful art exhibitions. The museum was once the home of Henri Willis Bendel (1868 – 1936), an American designer, philanthropist, and owner of the eponymous luxurious Fifth Avenue store in New York City where fashionable fashionistas once flocked. The architecture is stunning with its slate roof, lead-framed glass windows, gargoyles, lions, and sculptures on the manicured grounds.
During our visit to the museum, there was a stunning exhibition by the artist Sophy Regensburg (1885-1974) who started painting later in life at the age of 67 in 1950s New York when her physician advised her to start taking it easy. Over the course of her life, she painted 500 works and painted every day. She also did needlework, which she deftly captured in her paintings along with her household items including beautiful soup tureens and decorative cake stands, which she used to create her still lives. Her color palette is richly colorful and vibrant and draws the eye to learn the "story" behind each of the works.

The next upcoming exhibition at the Bendel Museum is Nancy Macko: The Fragile Bee, with an opening reception on April 13, 2023. The exhibition closes on September 3, 2023. There is also another wonderful event on June 4, 2023, Orchestra Lumos – In Times of Fear.
