Celebrating its 18th year in 2020, The Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) located in Bronx, New York attracts locals as well as visitors who travel from around the world to see the thousands of stunning orchids on display. For the 2020 show, the acclaimed designer Jeff Leatham created a "kaleidoscope of color" utilizing orchids of all sizes, shapes, and colors to create a magical environment. Be prepared to have your senses dazzled! The Orchid Show runs until April 19, 2020.
Welcome to the The Orchid Show
For the past several years, Luxury Experience has experienced the sensational Orchid Show at the NYBG, and we are always impressed with the imaginative presentation of floral designs that the designers create. We attended on opening day, February15, 2020 and as always, we were transported to a fantasy world of orchids.
For the 2020 show, the NYBG enlisted the acclaimed designer Jeff Leatham (artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, and floral designer to the stars) to work his incredible magic to create a kaleidoscope of color, transforming each of the galleries of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory into an imaginative paradise. The result was an enchanted fantasy world of exquisite and rare orchids that celebrated their beauty.
Whether you are an orchid expert or our new to orchids, the show will totally engage and delight your senses. We thoroughly enjoyed the 2020 show and share some orchid facts, information, and tips to maximize your enjoyment at the NYBG.
Interesting Facts about Orchids
Orchids come in all sizes, shapes, and colors, some are strongly perfumed, while others arescentless. They grow in tropical, sub-tropical, and even artic terrain. Some orchids are epiphytes that grow high up on trees and attach themselves by wrapping their roots around the tree, although they are not parasitic and do not harm the tree. Some orchids are terrestrial meaning they grow in the ground.
Cultivated by the Chinese for 2,500 years, orchids have won a place of honor in the hearts of many throughout the world. There are many types of orchids; some have tiny flowers and stand less than 6-inches high, others stand on tall stalks, while some orchids have very large flowers measuring 8-inches in diameter.
Several Types of Orchids at The New York Botanical Garden’s – The Orchid Show
Cattleya (Corsage Orchids): These are large, frilly, and fragrant orchids that come in many colors and are used for corsages. There are 70 species that are native to Central and South America.
Cymbodium (Asian Corsage Orchids): They are easy to identify by their grass-like leaves, tall spikes, and waxy flowers. These orchids come in many colors including green.
Dendrobium (Cane Orchids): There are more than 900 species of these types of orchids that grow across Asia and Oceania and have adapted to diverse climates from highup in the Himalayas to tropical climates.
Epidendrum (Reed Orchids): They have small flowers that grow on long, thin reed-like stems. There are more than 1,000 species that grow in the Americas. Some are epiphytes (tree dwellers) while others are terrestrial (growin the ground).
Oncidium (Dancing Lady Orchids): These orchids have small, fragrant flowers on slender branches. Flowers are usually yellow or brown with ruffled edges like the hem of a lady’s skirts while dancing.
Paphiopedilum (Slipper Orchids): Slipper orchids are easily distinguished by their large lower pouch which attracts insects to enter and pollinate the flower. There are 60 species that grow in tropical Asia and come in a widerange of colors. Some are striped, spotted, bumpy, and hairy.
Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids): Their distinctive shape resembles a moth. One of the interesting facts about this orchid is that it can be spotted or have patterns which attract pollinators.
Vanda (Rainbow Orchids): These large orchids come in all colors of the rainbow and can also be spotted or have patterns which attract pollinators.

The New York Botanical Garden is a 250-acre oasis located in Bronx, New York. Founded in1891, the garden attracts year-round visitors with its exquisite beauty, spectacular exhibitions, and interesting programs. It is a National Historic Landmark located in Bronx, New York where its nearby neighbors include Fordham University and the Bronx Zoo. Do allow a minimum of 4 – 5 hours to thoroughly experience the New York Botanical Garden and its many programs.
Other special exhibitions and events, such as Members-Only Previews, may cause early closing of Garden areas. Exceptions are also made for evening events, which may take place after normal Garden hours.
