We had the good fortune of attending the World Premiere of Sleeping Beauty Dreams: Progressive Fantasy Show at The Beacon Theatre in New York City, New York on Friday, December 14, 2018, the first of a 2-night performance. Prior to New York, Sleeping Beauty Dreams was performed in Miami on December 7 and 8, 2018 at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
While the story of Sleeping Beauty is a well-known and beloved classic fairy tale that has enchanted all in books, films, and ballet productions, producer and director Rem Hass’ version provided a new and creative look at the story with Sleeping Beauty Dreams.
Diana Visheva
The Princess
The 2-act performance was one of daring, a fantasy of the senses that filled the mind and pushed the envelope of creativity of contemporary dance and other art forms to create a unique and spectacular evening of the arts.
The program described Sleeping Beauty Dreams as "a contemporary dance and art show featuring global prima ballerina Diana Vishneva as the Princess, in a fusion of performance art, electronic music, new media art, and revolutionary Real-Time Digital Avatar technology."
Digital Avatar
The theme of the performance as "What did the Princess dream about during her 100-year slumber? This is a journey into her inner world of passions, fears and temptations. It’s a quest to find her true self."
The brainchild of producer and director Rem Hass, the performance had an other worldly, futuristic feel and look, in part due to the creative genius of choreographer Edward Clug, the inspired music of Dutch musician Thijis de Vlieger of NOISIA, the futuristic costumes by Bart Hess, lighting artist Laurent Fort, and the clever use of Digital Avatars that reacted to the dancers’ movements created by artist Tobias Gremmler and fuse*.

Marcelo Gomes (The Princess)
Of course, the heart of the performance, was up to the dancers who created a memorable and exciting evening of dance. Principal Dancer Diana Vishneva brilliantly excelled in her exciting performance as The Princess. Born in Leningrad, what is now St. Petersburg, she started dancing at the age of six. Classically trained she was a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre in New York (2005-2017), and the Marlinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, before exploring the world of contemporary dance. Watching her dance, we knew that we were watching one of the dance greats.

Marcelo Gomes as The Prince, Mi Deng in her role as dancer, along with the talented ensemble helped create a most magical evening that celebrated the arts in many forms, dance, music, multi-media, and design. Bravo!
Marcelo Gomes
