The Statues of Central Park
by Catarina Astrom and June Eding

The Statues of Central Park is a 192-page hardcover book that features gorgeous color photographs by Catarina Astrom with interesting commentary by June Eding that bring the statues of Central Park to life. New York City Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver provides the foreword about the iconic 843-acre Central Park, a lush oasis located in the heart of Manhattan, where residents and tourists alike can escape the hustle and bustle of the "city that never sleeps."

Although I have walked through Central Park in New York City countless times, I must admit that although I appreciated its many statues, I never really gave them much thought until I read the book, The Statues of Central Park, which opened my eyes to their history and sheer diversity. From historical figures, to musical icons, to literary giants, Central Park is filled with statues, monuments, and sculptures that tell the tale of this most interesting and intriguing city.

A few of my favorite Central Park statutes, sculptures, and monuments in the book include: Alice in Wonderland, located at the Conservatory Lake, near East 75th Street and Fifth Avenue, Balto, the sled dog located at East Drive at East 67th Street, the soaring tribute to one of the Jazz greats, the legendary Duke Ellington (April 29, 2899 – May 24, 1974) located at Duke Ellington Circle, Central Park North and Fifth Avenue, the sculpture of the beloved children’s author, Hans Christian Andersen at the Conservatory Lake, near East Drive and East 74th Street, and the one of Mother Goose located at East Drive at East 71st Street, near Rumsey Playfield, to name but a few. I hope that you have as much fun as I did, reading about, and discovering, or perhaps remembering the famous statues of Central Park.
